looks like somebody loved that car! clean!

of course pictures are deceiving!....see it in person, get a mechanic to look at it...and NEVER buy into the fact that you HAVE to buy anything "tomorrow"....If you want to commit to buy with a refundable deposit (based on your mechanics findings) then go for it....but investing 12000 is worth 3-400 for the mechanic...most charge less than that!

Any engine/underbody pics? That's where you need to really pay attention.

That's a REALLY classy looking car. Looks like the owner was totally anal about cleanliness too, your win.

Definitely gotta respect the due diligence others have mentioned re: maintenance, but man, even with engine problems, you'd be hard pressed to dissuade me from that beauty.

1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, est price. $10.8 million-30 million
1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, est price $12.4 million
1968 Ford GT40 Gulf, est price $11 million

These are all old cars. Granted this is a BMW and not a ferrari classic, but age should not really be considered if it is well maintained.
Just saying I thought it was a bit overpriced. I work in Orange County with auto wholesalers and see a good amount of older cards M3 and the such and just would think the price would have depreciated a bit past that, and even if it is well maintained its a piece of metal and is prone to wear and degrading.

and the cars you are refering to are well considered classics and over 50-60 years old

It all comes down to the condition. If the chassis, engine / drivetrain are in as good shape as the interior pics and paintwork, it's easily worth that price. OP, give us an update!

Man that is one clean e34. I owned a e39 M5 for 2 years but always browsed the e34 section on the M5board to gain some knowledge on the s38. If you do buy this car I suggest joining M5board.com as you will gain extensive knowledge as I did when I first got my e39 M5. Many DIY threads and sources for OEM parts @ discounted prices. For the asking price its fair, given the low mileage (for the year) and condition. I was looking @ a 91 M5 over 2 years ago for $7.5k asking price/non neg with rust, 203k mile s38 with oil leaks, shot interior and the owner said that the s38 had never been rebuilt. IIRC the s38 needs a rebuild at around 200k miles @ a few grand. Funny how the pics the guy sent me were very misleading as they were over 5 years old! Also e34's have heater core issue's so run the heat and smell any signs of coolant. Part is cheap but labor can run a pretty penny. PPI is highly recommended as everyone has already said but make sure you give it a thorough testdrive. Service records do help and it should be using TWS oil. GL with it if you do intend on purchasing it.
