Cordless Drills?
I need to get a drill for around the house and to install my aluminum pedals! I don't know much, but I am considering something like this...
Dewalt Danny

The voltage rating just means how long the drills can last power-wise.
If you want actual motor/drilling strength, that's where you look at the current/amp rating. Last I looked at drills, drilling power is comparable between many corded and cordless models.

Mikita is also good--I have used their cordless set briefly and liked it as well. If you go with the Dewalt, get it from Costco. That's where I got mine. It was cheaper and it came with a nice set of bits (drill bits, extenders, and various phillips and flathead bits). Plus you can't beat Costco's return policy, just in case.

I bought a $35 Coleman drill from Costco. The thing was terrible. It was barely powerful enough to put up some blinds. I broke two of the bits that came with it and stripped another couple. This was after only about 4 or 5 drill holes and screws. The power was pretty crappy too (a higher voltage than the Dewalt one that I got). I didn't want to spend over $100 on a simple cordless drill so I returned it and got another one. Same thing happened. Then Costco brought a couple of nice Dewalt sets and I bought one of them. Great drill, no stripped/broken bits, plenty of power, and an extra battery. If you do various light repairs, etc. around the house, it pays to have a good drill--you never know when you'll need it. But if you're not a handy person and just need something to mount the occasional mirror, then *maybe* a cheapo drill will be okay--but only if the job is very simple and straightforward. I'll never buy a crappy power tool again. A good one should last many years through many jobs.

I'm not sure of a $35 drill. Seems too low to me. Check out fatwallet.com, you may find some deals there are higher 'list priced' drills, for less.
I agree that you need a good drill. Guys, I have a friend who even put a drill on her wedding registry! Its a very useful item. I wouldn't pay 200 or so, but I would you think you can get a good cordless for 60-80 bucks. I think that should get you something good. As far as drill bits, if they are stripping quickly, then the quality of them sucks. I have had good experience with Black and Decker drill bits. If I need something for occasional use, I"ll buy the dollar store drill bit set. You can use it a few times, and then it screws up, but thats okay i guess. Better put pressure into the screw you are drillling, it won't strip so bad. Stripping will usually occur if it comes out and is turning against the top of the screw. why am i even talking about drills! |

I ended up buying this today. I'm hoping the bits that I purchased will go thru the metal brake pedal. A big Thank You! to all of you for helping me out!

Very nice--you won't regret spending a bit more to get some quality. Hope you got it from Costco too!
