Which Nav is for me

Alright. What navigation product is for me?
Any brand will do, Megellan, Garmin, TomTom, etc.

I would like it to be able to put on custom POI (i would download the speed cameras to it)
I would like it to display my speed (we all know our BMW's speedo is off)
Okay size screen, color.

BTW.. Do I have to pay monthly for these things?
Or is it a one time lifetime fee?

Thanks a lot guys.

Dont get a Magellan 4250. It was a major letdown. I would stick with Garmin or Tom TOm

I just bought a Mio Moov 500 last week. Radio Shack had them for $129 one day only??? $250 normal price.

4.7" screen and some neat options put it ahead of the others for the money.

Works great.

All 50 states and Puerto Rico are loaded in. It has a card slot for over seas travel.

Not sure why it was a major letdown. The only problem I have with mine is the Bluetooth volume.

The Garmin Nuvi's are your best bet. But dont depend on their spedometers because the yarn't all that accurate either.

I think the feature list would be helpful, I have a Garmin Nuvi 770:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=10623#specsTab

It has Europe and US maps preloaded, which was the main reason why I got it. The traffic download feature is free for some period of time (I forgot how long), it works in Europe too (I was there two weeks ago). After that trial period I think a monthly fee is needed.

If I ever spend the effort into putting mp3s in my SD card, the FM transmitter functionality would be very useful when the thing is used as a music player.

The portable friction mount:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8100
is perhaps the best accessory I know. It "sticks" to the dash, but most importantly it brings the device within arm's length so it's easy to adjust. It's also likely to be lower (as opposed to suctioned onto the windshield) and thus block less of the driver's view.

It's supposed to have custom POI but I haven't tried that yet... I bought mine at Amazon for around mid-300s I think...

One of my co-workers is going to Europe for a 6-week vacation next year, and he's going to get the Garmin 770 for the reasons you have posted.

I don't agree with the friction mount, though. I use an air vent mount, which is easily removeable, and cost a heck of a lot less ($13 shipped vs $39.99)

OK maybe I was being a little dramatic, it actaually works pretty well, but I have had better experiences with Garmin & Tom Tom. My major gripes with the Magellan: It can take 10 minutes to find a satellite, the Bluetooth is very dissapointing (cannot hear people on the other end, and others hearing me on the other end. My speakerphone on my cell is better!). The last thing is by the time I have physically passed a road, the GPS shows that I am just coming up on it. So there is a delay - does this happen to you? Text to speech, and turn prompts make up for this, but still.

The good: Text to speech and turn prompts, AAA directory, intuitive, phonebook, POI locator.

I will definately go with a Garmin or TOm Tom next time.

The only time that it takes a little while (2 - 3 minutes max) to find satellites is when I haven't used it in a few weeks.

Agreed. That's a common complaint. I use a Motorola H700 instead.

No. The Magellan has always been fantastic about directions, even when I first bought it - about a month after it came out. It has also had two firmware updates since, with "improved" routing listed as one of the fixes. Two of my friends also have the 4250 and one has the 3250. Neither one has had problems.

Problem solved. As a gift, I got a Nuvi 260 W (tts). FTW! After I opened the box, it took one minute to find a satelite and boot-up, and it was working like a charm immediately. Could not say the same about the Magellan.

Anyone want a 6 month old Magellan 4250 with free traffic updates for another 6 months? Make me an offer! LOL

Sony NV-U94T

Two of my friends have this and really like it. I think I remember seeing it on sale or something.
