im currently 21 soon 22, and all the cars ive driven were registered under my mom's name. afaik, my parents never put me under their insurance policy either if that makes any sense.
anyhow, i was wondering when i get auto insurance under my own name, do insurance companies think that i haven't drove at all or something? i know due to age, i will get a pretty high insurance rate but me not ever having my own auto insurance effect me further? i have a pretty very clean driving record other than 3 speeding tickets i got which got dumbed down to careless driving tickets. i don't understand how auto rates in situations like this are calculated...

When you get your auto insurance quotes they'll just ask how old you were when you were first licensed.
They will also pull your driving record by using your license number. I want to say that if your tickets (or any claims) occurred within the last 3 years then they will affect your rate, but this may vary state to state. They'll also want to see (i.e., you will need to provide proof) that whatever vehicle you're currently driving is insured right now, and that there has been no lapse in coverage. |

like bob said, the tickets that count are within 3 to 5 years, depending on carrier. 1 ticket usually won't rape you too hard, but 2 within 3 years at your age...you're gonna get raped. just prepare for it. you need a better attorney. reduction in charges is great, but dismissal is the goal.

One benefit of having insurance in your name is that some companies (if not all) offer a longevity discount, where you get a lower rate the longer you stay with a particular company. But it may be more advantageous to be an additional driver on your parents' policy and receive a multi-car discount.

thanks for the clarification, on a second note; do insurance companies see the initial ticket as well as the outcome after lawyer or just the final outcome?

First, not sure how your parents got away with a teen driver in the house and not having them on their policy. I would say you and them were lucky. If you were driving their car and were not on their policy and you happen to have an accident, they would have been serious screwed. The insurance company would have refused to cover any the damage to you or the your parents car, they would have covered the other person if you hit them but would have refuse to cover you.
Anyway, years insured does help, if you stay with the same company, I have been with mine for over 20 yrs and by far our insurance is lower than anyone else we know who shops around and moves from company to company. I have a 16 yr going on our policy in a few months and he is only going to increase our insurance by $600 a year which is not bad considering what I hear kids paying. I will also tell you friends of ours never had their own insurance or cars, they are in sales and always had a company car and insurance since they got out of college. They too have teen driver and are force to buy a car and get insurance and the insurance company is raping them. They are being treated as if they were new drivers since there is no record of them every having insurance or owning a car before. They are the same age as us and their rates are far higher than ours that is for sure. Last edited by Maestro; 04-04-2011 at 08:46 AM. |

Your screwed, but you'll be even more screwed if you deal with Liberty Mutual Insurance. These guys are raping me for $325 a month starting next month. Previously i've been paying $276 a month. Screw Liberty Mutual!!!!!!

but if your addressed is to somewhere other location, you will be insured as a out of household driver (depending on their policy of course) and 3 tickets is not a clean record... far from it look at it this way: I'm 22, almost 23 I am listed as the primary on a Dodge Caravan and I'm paying 1200 per year But I'm allowed to drive all the cars (including the Z4 and my M3) If I was the primary driver for the m3, my rate would be 1700 per year (still pretty awesome) I have had 2 tickets and 1 accident (no other vehicles involved). However, both tickets i did traffic school so thus not really on my record. Accident was when I was under 18. So technically, you could say I have a clean record as the tickets and accidents no longer appear on my record. If it matters, my credit score is 777. For you, at the age of 21, if you were to have a 40k care, I would say you'll be paying close to 3k a year. why not have your parents are primaries? it will be a lot cheaper

Three speeding tickets at 21 isn't a "clean" record.Expect to pay around $4,000 for a decent premium and coverage.

Not to mention that careless driving is actually a pretty serious ticket, at least here in FL. So getting the tickets changed to careless isn't that good.

The fun part here though is if the insurance does ANY investigation, his family's going to be in for a world of fun when/if they realize the car has been 'his' for a while now. |
