back to the travel and equipment conversation, I have proof of purchase for all my pieces in a side pocket in my bag, just so if i'm ever questioned at a border, i have a date for purchases of every component of any value.

hasn't come up as an issue yet.... and i hope it won't.

my internal hard drive crashed yesterday. no, i hadn't backed it up in a LONG time. (all my work-related media is backed up on double-redundancy drives regularly, however).
i lost all the photos i took this year, except what's uploaded to flickr and whatnot, and yeah pretty much everything that is not footage for my business, is gone.
giant fail.

basically, they couldn't recover anything in a clean room (replaced heads) and suggested shipping it to a data center that can do damaged media recovery. and even then, it's only possible. Quoted $700-2,000. Insurance deductible is $500, but they might not even be able to recover anything.

i was uploading a file, walked away. came back and typed my password in to resume from screen save, and it hung. powered sucker down, rebooted, violent clicking. and that was all she wrote.

damn rodi, that sucks. If you decide on doing recovery, I recommend drivesavers.com.

That being said, you need a RAID backup system in place since you're a pro and all.

this was my internal macbook drive. can't raid that. and as i mentioned, i keep my actual work-related footage on double-redundancy backups. meaning, i've got backups of my backups. i just haven't backed up my other shit in quite a while. i just checked, and my last backup of my photos was in December. ugh. idiot.

i am not a videographer.

and i said i wasn't, by definition, a professional photographer. meaning i don't make the majority of my income from being a photographer. just a very small minority of my income.
