Trackfiend was selling an F4 IS here for $900 a few months ago. I knew that was a great price, but I just couldn't swing it then. I'm hoping another such sale pops up somewhere.

Just booked a Thanksgiving week trip to Vegas. We're planning some day trips to Death Valley and Valley of Fire State Park. I've been thinking about buying a Rokinon 8mm fisheye and decided to grab one for the trip. I figure they'll be no shortage of opportunities to use it out there.

You can run out to the speedway in the AM and take pictures of the planes landing.

36.268748,-115.006461 Park over here only because of the way the planes approach the runway.
Park on the speedway side or the Nellis PoPo will cause you bodily distress and the likely hood of a weapon being involved is likely. Hint of the day. They usually take off in another direction and you would go here. 36.218336,-115.059732 but all you get is belly shots.Granted they would be carrying various live "goodies" but belly shots are boring. Look up to see if there are any "Red Flag" ops going on. Then you will see quite a few photogs out there. Lots of landings from a major training operation. You might see the TBirds out also. The blue plane is an "aggressor" as is they guy on the quad.

Wow, that's a sweet shot. So sharp.
![]() I'll keep it in mind. Wifey won't be big on sitting around while I shoot pics of airplanes, but if we happen to be in the area and just pull over for a few....

I left wifey and the kids cruising the strip while I stood in 112 degree heat working on my suntan for 4 hours or so. I used the 300 and some with the 1.4x. You need a tripod because of the distance you are shooting at.
Mark, Here you go! Green Flag op. http://www.nellis.af.mil/library/flyingoperations.asp I'm not sure if they will be flying around Nellis though.

Thanks, Kev. We'll see if I get a chance to shoot some. I may rent a 70-200mm f4 IS for the trip, but if you were using a big rig to get those shots, I'm not sure a 200mm will cut it.
And I just realized I forgot to change the delivery address for my 8mm FE, so it'll be coming to the house instead of the office. Damn. I was really looking forward to grabbing some shots on the way home tomorrow. Even had some shot locations picked out. Supposed to be a great day weather-wise. ![]()

Just stop by the flower shop instead. She will be wondering what that package is.
200 is fine as long as you can get a good exposure and crop it down. The planes do cross the highway further East than what I gave you. The real thing you want to catch is having the hills in the background, it makes for a better shot than just sky.

No need to practice panning shots, they are not coming in that fast. You just need to keep the shutter speed around 1k+ because of the distance, use a high ISO to give you some latitude and take the noise out after.

![]() He's right, though. And this is just what Dave was saying a few weeks ago. Your friends will not notice a little bit of noise in an otherwise cool pic. My sister keeps telling me I should be making a living as a photographer. I keep telling her I'd starve to death if I tried. I'm nothing compared to most of the photogs on this or any other forum. But her untrained eye only sees great pics from me. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. ![]()

Subject matter trumps "perfection" every time. Two of my most popular images have significant "flaws" that other photographers notice and will likely comment on, but they continue to get hundreds of hits per day. Dave

This Rokinon 8mm is proving to be a fun lens. I took it out of the box, stuck it on the camera, and went outside. I set the aperture to f11 and the focus to infinity, shutter speed to 1/80 and ISO 200. Really hard to get an OOF image with this as long as your subject is more than 10ft away. And the distortion isn't too bad if you keep straight lines away from the edges.
Just a couple boring shots of my street, and then one with straight lines closer to the camera. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Ok, ok.
This image is in my top three. The "problem" is obvious. That white blurb at the lower right is a snow covered post. I pulled up in the car and he was in this perfect pose, so I grabbed the shot. I even saw the pole but went ahead and snapped. He moved and I moved to get clear shots, but this pose trumped the perfection of all the other shots. ![]() White-tail deer buck in snow by dcstep, on Flickr This is my most popular shot. Unfortunately, I can't license it legally because I can't get a property release from the London Eye. The problems with the picture are small, noise and some blur because I wasn't allowed to carry my monopod onboard and had to shoot at low shutter speed hand held. ![]() Romantic full moon as seen from London Eye by dcstep, on Flickr Both are cases of right place at right time, but not perfect execution. Still, the subject and or pose give both images plenty of power.
