Came across a modded GTI last night

Not sure what the guy had done, but from 60-100 it took me a good amount of time to pull a car length in front of him (with proceed 1.45 map). I was impressed. Didn't get a chance to talk to the guy to see what he had done because he made a uturn and my guess is he went to toy with other cars. I didn't know there was such a big market for upgrading GTI's...my ignorance.

They are not that heavy and while they are FWD there are numerous computer flash companies such as APR and REVO that esily bump stock hp to 300hp/300tq.... thats WITH THE STOCK turbo...never mind if he had larger turbos... I ran a STOCK GTI manual trans and he beat me even with a flash..we made several runs...and even switched cars...results were the same... those are quick little cars

If I recall a $500 chip can bump the GTI up to 250hp/300lb-ft of torque or so. A stage II (intake + exhaust + chip) can get up to 280+hp and is maybe $1k more or so. There is quite the market for tuning the 2.0T engine in the GTI/Jetta/A3/A4.

Doesn't STAGE 2 mean larger turbos and not just a collection of upgraded parts? My freind had a Stage 3 A4 and he had Stage 3 size turbos.

The definition of "stage" varies by tuner and car model.

GTIs are very fast with very little upgrade money. Granted FWD sux, but that doesnt matter much on the highway.

So, this was on a track right? (He says knowing it wasn't :mad I grew up in Maryland, my family lives in Maryland and there is a chance I will be back in Maryland in a couple of years. Now, I am not going to be hypocritical and say don't speed, because lord knows I have, but keep it reasonable, as conditions allow, and keep the racing off the road.

BTW - I am an equal opportunity ass ripper, but VWVortex usually locks the threads pretty quick when VW owners talk about street racing

It seems it was just a quick speed up 60-100. You have never done that alone? I hate to come off as a jerk but as long as you are not swerving in an out etc. speeding up real quick isnt just like you speeding in your car.

Also, VWVortex can do that but that seems very blinded to me. Obviously people do it so they can not speak of it?

Back On Topic- GTI's are great vehicles, fast, nice and not expensive. The next best thing (R32) is even more nuts when modded.

You are intitled to you opinion...and here is mine:

The main difference is, when you are competing against someone else in any way, even in speed up from 60-100, you are going to be spending at least some of your concentration on whether or not your winning (otherwise, why would you be competing) plus you automatically are blocking one of your escape routes because you have another car that is pacing you, directly beside you and keeping pace.

And letting the stories go on and on only leads to one-upmanship. I applaud that guy who posted a couple days ago about NOT racing a neon who tried to race him would much rather see more mature posters like that.

Sorry to disappoint. It was a highway area with 2 lanes each side that was seperated from oncoming traffic by a good 100ft worth of trees. He was toying (reving his engine) with me a few miles earlier in a populated area and once we cleared out of town and it was just him an I alone, I pulled up next to him and he downshifted and I played along. No one else nearby, just two sober drivers flooring it for a few seconds to see what would happen.

I was reading a GTI board this morning to try to look at what the mod world looked like for them. Pretty impressive and I did read a thread about the shock of a 350z owner when he couldn't pull away. Oh well.

This doesn't surprise me too much--GTI's are fast--and pretty light to an E9X relatively speaking, right? They're fun to drive too.

If it is a normal highway in the United States. For the most part you can see a great deal ahead of you. If done right you can speed up to 100(which would be very short time) and be done. Again if done right. You have never gone 80 or more with cars to the left or right of you? If so that kind of debunks your logic. Sure you are concentrating on winning but you are concentrating on driving as well when speeding.

Also the guy didn't race a neon in his convertible. Ok I can see why for numerous reasons.

I know 2 people really well with GTI's, one has a 1.8t that has chip and intake, the other has the VR6 both manual transmission. I walk away slowly on the 1.8T. The VR6 I have not really got to run that much but he isnt very good at driving it and in my short 40-100 race I pulled at the start since he was in the wrong gear and held it.

Mind you this is in a 328i... You really have to take advantage of the RPM's, most of the time when I race with someone I pull on them when my car hits 5,800-7k RPM since they are usually shifting when and I am making peak power.

I have test driven the new 2.0t and its slow and would need a good chip.

I have also recently raced a saab running 10-11 PSI of boost and only pulled at the start when he had turbo lag and then he stayed at my bumper up to 100. I also ran into a A6 2.0T and walked away on them maybe 5 feet from 20-80 ish. I have also raced a 350Z which he only put me at his bumper from 0-70ish and he had after market exhaust.

You're kidding right? I would hardly say a stock MarkV GTI 2.0T is slow...

It isn't the fastest thing on the road for sure...but it's not slow.

Or am I the only guy here who doesn't own a sub-5 second 0 to 60 car?

Your right its not that slow but its still not as fast as my car. My buddies lease on his VR6 is running out so we test drove the DSG version. Now he is probably going to get a BMW or a new C class but has quite some time to go.

Well, I believe they are 500lbs lighter than the stock 335. 200hp (2.0) and can be heavily modded. I have not had my car dyno'd but the improvement was very noticable when I put in the procede. I was flooring it right in the HP sweet spot and I did pull on him but not nearly as fast as I thought I would. I wouldn't be suprised if he did'nt somehow have it up to 300hp and 250+ tq (not at the wheels) and maybe he dropped the weight of the car another 100lbs with the right wheels and exhaust.

Add to that, I remember I had both windows down and the moonroof wide open.

I could see him embarrasing a stock 350z or mustang gt.

At high speeds, I believe that can make quite a bit of difference. Next time, make sure your windows are closed.
