interesting conversation i have today

so I put my car on craigslist for sale and got an interesting conversation about the car. wasted probably 10 mins of my time so no big deal. just thought it's a little funny and wanna share. sorry if it's long.

guy: BMW still available?

me: got a guy put down deposit but im still showing it. do u want to see it?

guy: what car is urs again? sorry responded to tons of adds

me: 10' M3 coupe. sounds like a dealer, are u?

guy: no

me: k. if u wanna see it, lemme know

guy: can u send me a pic of it pls

me: pic + stopping for gas so here u go

guy: im very interested. i just can't find the ad. any pic of inside?

me: pic + probably ad expired. what info u wanna know?

guy: manual or auto? and mods?

me: manual. bought the car not even 2 months ago so no time to put any mods on yet

guy: asking price?

me: the other guy agreed 48.3 so that or higher

guy: payments?

me: what do u mean?

guy: ill make payments to you and we write up a legal contract
me: you pay my bank whatever we agree on and ill pay them off the difference so they can release title to you. are u paying on ur own or financing?

guy: my own. ill bring cash to you to wherever you like every month

me: lol. u for real? sorry buddy thats not how it goes. either you buy it out entirely with ur money or have ur financing company pay me the entire amount. im not a bank and don't do personal financing for u

it was from texting so i just stopped replying. he tried to contact me again after but i just ignored him

Hmmmmmmmmmm....I've actually been on both ends of that. Back in the day when I was fending for myself and a lot less financially secure than I am now, I found a car that I wanted in a city 3 hrs away. I emailed *extensively* with the the woman selling it, getting history, pics, etc. I was strapped for cash and explained to her that I'd be willing to put down X amount and make payments of X amount, and if I defaulted on any payments, she could keep the car and the cash. Everyone I knew thought I was *crazy*. She agreed to the terms, and 8 or so months later, we met on the side of the road as she was passing through and we completed the transaction. Everything went as smooth as silk.

On the flip side, my best friend at the time self-financed his car to a guy we knew. Guy never missed a payment, and eventually paid it off. His older brother was interested in one of the cars I had at the time, so I self-financed him based on his brother's ongoing transaction with my friend, with the same stipulation I had with the aforementioned woman, with one add'l clause: I let him take the car and I kept the title. After about 5 months, I had to repo the car b/c this guy was *horrible* at sticking to the agreement. But I didn't let his experience stop me, and self-financed a couple more people over the years.

I try to put myself in their shoes, and remember that not everyone out there is a crook, and that everyone out there isn't a scammer. There are truly some very good people that get caught in very bad circumstances, and just need one break to finally get ahead. Life isn't easy for everyone, all the time.

Should the dude really be looking for a $48k car if hes caught in very bad circumstances though?

He might be in a bad situation that he can't resolve credit-wise, but that doesn't mean he can't afford the car. Maybe he can't get a loan or something? Dunno, just putting it out there....

Exactly the person does not know how to manage his money and you want to cut him a loan. if he going to make a down payment just buy a car you can afford there are plenty of cars out there for $1000, just buy what you can afford verse trying to convince people to loan you money.

Going to have to beg to differ. Tons of folks were foreclosed on during the economic downturn. Dude could have had a divorce that forced him into a bad situation. Just saying, don't judge people based on what you *don't* know about them, and never judge a book by its cover.
