my 2012 328i sounding like a diesel engine
Hey Gang I have a question for the forum, I have 328i f30 and right now she sounds like a diesel engine, I have taken her to two different bmw dealerships here in Germany and they keep saying that it is normal wich I am not buying , usually the things that make 4 bangers sound like this are 1) being low on engine oil which I checked ,, double checked and triple checked , using cheap gas .. which I only use 93 so what else could make it sound like this , this is becoming increasingly frustrating

I do believe this is normal for direct injection engines, especially during cold start. Once it warms up though it should essentially subside.

Totally normal. Direct injected 4 bangers sound surprisingly loud and clackety-clackety. If you really think it sounds like a diesel, go listen to a 328d. You'll probably think that sounds like a farm tractor.

Yeah, sounds like a diesel but doesn't have the torque of a diesel

I thought that is how all N20s sound like, which is one of the main reasons I went with the 335, the engine sound is much more satisfying. That and the fact that in Canada you could not get Msport on a 328.

I would use atleast 95 RON with many European counties offering 98 RON. In the USA 93 is fine, because they use a different measuring system ([RON +MON]/2) So US 93 is generally as good or better than Euro 95.

As all have said: totally normal.
If you look back at 2-3 year-old threads, there were several that complained about the noise when the engine first came out. Also, as one mentioned, you should be using 95 or 98 RON gasoline if you're in Europe, as there is a different measuring system. The book says 89 minimum, which is the USA/CA AKI that is similar to 95 in EU. One further note: the under-hood sound/heat insulation pad was removed from petrol (gasoline) engined cars prior to 2010 as a cost saving measure. Have a dealer order one and install it. |

Sorry guys, I really need to check things out BEFORE posting - duh! Anyway, I just popped the hood and there IS a sound-deadening pad attached. Maybe there's a SUPER sound-deadening pad? Not going to bother - the rattling type noise dissipates once the engine is warmed up anyway.
