Munich, 30th January 2012. BMW Motorsport returns with six BMW M3 DTM cars in 2012 as it makes its comeback in the DTM. One of the cars, the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM, will bear the design of Castrol EDGE and Aral Ultimate. This marks an extension of the existing, long-term partnership between Castrol and BMW Motorsport, and sees Aral Ultimate presented as partner of BMW Motorsport in the DTM.
“For many years we have put our faith in high-performance Castrol lubricants, and have celebrated countless successes together on the racetrack,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “For that reason, everyone here at BMW Motorsport is delighted that we are able to build on this established partnership in the DTM. BMW took second place at the most recent 24 Hour Nurburgring race back in June 2011 and BMW uses the track extensively to develop and test its new models, the prototype versions of which are often spotted by our spy photographers.

Follow along and watch the transformation of an E90 M3 from salvaged car to race car in project journal by BIMMERPOST member scottn2retro.
Scott has been racing in BMW Club Racing since the 2004 season, winning numerous regional and national championships and setting over a dozen class track records. After the success of their E46 M3 and 135i race cars, he’s decided to take on an even bigger project in taking a salvaged E90 M3 with frame and rear subframe damage and bringing it all the way to race form.
They’ve already started gutting this 2008 e90 M3 with manual transmission and only 11K miles on the drivetrain. Follow along inside.
BMW insider Scott26 is reporting that BMW is currently working on some special packages/editions for the E92 M3 coupe before it bows out in 2013. In the works is a lightweight (CRT type) package for the E92 M3 coupe which will feature some of the key details of the M3 CRT sedan such as the carbon fiber hood and special seats. It’s not known whether such a package/model will be homologated for the US market.
BMW is however considering some sort of updated Competition Package for the US.
Ryan Amico and friend Jimmy (GOLFFRR) were two of the recent lucky attendees at BMW’s performance center driving event for M certified dealers throughout the country. What they participated in was basically an enhanced version of the standard Performance Center Driving School course. Check out GOLFFRR’s journal from the experience inside.
We spent some time at the 2012 Detroit NAIAS with Matt Russell, M Brand Manager for BMW North America. Matt is a BMW enthusiast like us and is a BIMMERPOST member himself. We asked Matt some current hot M related topics and he was able to share the following.

What were the final production numbers for the US 1M?
740 units. The very first one imported was the Valencia Orange 1M Pace Car which debuted at the Rolex 24 hour race at Daytona.
Matt further expanded on the reason the 1M production run wasn’t extended into the 2012 model year. It was not due to any issues related to engine/emissions certification, but simply because BMW could not get enough MY2012 production to justify homologation. This had … CONTINUED

The Ultimate Driving Machine is a traditional BMW slogan and identity which BMW enthusiasts rally around, dating all the way back to 1975. In recent years however, this popular tag line took a back seat as BMW moved in different directions to the likes of the “JOY” campaign.
Fret not however, as BMWNA, which took on a new lead ad agency in the US (Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal & Partners) in April, is set to revive the Ultimate Driving Machine marketing identity this Saturday (Jan. 7), as the company will air a new 30-second television spot on national TV in the US. The commercial will premiere on NBC during the NFL wild-card games.
The commercial [see here at NY Times] starts off with an E92 M3 GTS sliding around … CONTINUED
