It appears that the F80 M3 has advanced to the final evaluation phase. The F80 has dropped some camouflage, added LED lights, and now features a trunk spoiler lip.
It’s now clear that the F80 M3 Sedan shares the same front end as the F82 M4 Coupe and each will feature an aggressive M styled front bumper with the now exposed air curtains, LED headlights and double slat grilles with M3/M4 badge. Late last year we put together a M4 render (see below) which were very accurate and gives a great preview of what the production front bumper of the M3 and M4 will look like with its aggressive air intakes and air curtains.
The FEP stage F80 mule also shows for the first time a trunk … CONTINUED
The latest F80 M3 spotting gives us the best look yet at its newest revealed features — double slat kidney grilles and a double-bubble carbon fiber roof.
Both the F80 M3 and F82 M4 will continue BMW’s latest trend to fit M models with double slat kidney grilles with a model badge affixed. The M6 and M5 LCI all feature this design.
And multiple M3 prototypes have now been spied with a camouflaged top, indicating a carbon fiber roof – first in the U.S. and now in Germany. The closeup photos we’ve posted show that the carbon fiber roof will have a sporty double-bubble shape – like the F82 M4 prototypes and M6 Coupes / Gran Coupes. A lightweight CF roof will also help to lower the … CONTINUED
The F80 M3 has been spotted with a camouflaged roof. How is this significant? Well, its brother, the F82 M4 Coupe has often been spotted with a camouflaged roof (as well as an optional top with moonroof), which typically indicates the presence of a carbon fiber roof, but the F80 M3 Sedan has never been seen with a camouflaged top, until now.
This F80 M3 prototype was spotted by a BIMMERPOST member while it undergoes hot weather testing in Las Vegas (where it recently hit 117F degrees) and is accompanied by some F15 X5 M prototypes. Like the M4, this likely indicates a carbon fiber roof for the upcoming M3 – the first time any M3 Sedan will feature such a lightweight roof (the E92 M3 … CONTINUED
Latest footage of the 2014 BMW M3 (F80) from track testing at the Nurburgring.
Nearly a month ago, we spotted the first non-black F82 M4 coupe prototype (in Silverstone) on the road (reposted below). We’ve just spied a Silverstone F82 M4 testing on the Nurburgring, wearing M Carbon Ceramic Brakes. This prototype doesn’t reveal any new physical details, but we do have a new technical detail to share.
We were recently told by a high-ranking BMW M official intimately familiar with M3/M4 development that the engine powering the M3/M4 will feature a nearly 8000 RPM redline. As we’ve reported all along, the M3/M4′s S55 engine will be an inline 6 cylinder with mutiple turbos, outputting around 100 lb-ft more torque and approximately same horsepowers as the current M3 (S65) engine. For comparison, the current M3 engine redlines at 8400 RPM. … CONTINUED
Ahead of its debut (in concept form) sometime later this year, the production F80 M3 prototype forges ahead with testing this week at the Nurburgring. We’ve got it on video giving us probably the best listen so far at the F80 M3′s multi-turbo inline 6.
If you recall, we recently reported on information gleaned from the M4 prototype’s registered VIN information (see here).
According to the VIN info, the M3 will be powered by a 310kW (415 hp) 3.0L inline 6 engine (s55) [photos]. Consistent with the information we’ve been posting, this would have the next M3 and M4 featuring similar horsepower figures to the current M3 (414 hp) from the 3.0L inline 6 multi-turbo s55 engine. But, we’ve also been previously told by a trusty source … CONTINUED
