Now that the M3 M4 technology day has come and gone, with access being granted to the press for the first time, BMW has released a slew of official track video footage of the prototypes. And since these are officially released videos, they feature some of the best quality video and audio yet of the F80 M3 / F82 M4.
For all the videos that have come about from the recent M3/M4 technology day, check the Videos section of our Tech Guide thread.
You’ve already seen the M3/M4 technical presentation slides in our Official Tech Guide Thread. Now view the presentation as it was meant to be digested – in animated form.
Who doesn’t like fancy 360 degree rotating views and animated technical blow-ups… we definitely do.
We’ve shared with you the M3/M4 official specs and our ride-along/workshop notes, now have an on board look as we ride with Bruno Spengler in the M4 prototype at BMW’s proving grounds near Munich.
Bruno shares his thoughts on the EPS (electric power steering), turbos, transmission and testing on the Nurburgring.
And if you’re wondering whether the in-cabin sounds you hear are artificially enhanced via Active Sound, we asked and were told by one of the BMW engineers that there was absolutely no artificial sound feature. But, other outlets have written that the M3/M4 will use the speakers to amplify the sound, so we have contradictory info. A request for clarification is in at BMW and we should have an answer soon.
Last year, Mr. Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO of BMW of North America, confirmed to us an inline 6 cylinder engine for the upcoming M3/M4, and we showed you spy photos of the engine. Despite these confirmations, stubborn rumors pop up periodically regarding a potential V6 configuration for the upcoming s55 engine.
If you needed any further convincing, now hear it from the BMW NA CEO himself (again). Speaking at an event that we are currently attending for the launch of the new X5 and 4 Series, Mr. Willisch references an inline engine for the M4 (and hence, M3), confirming he’s really happy that “it is going to be a car that has the cylinders in one line.” How would Mr. Willisch know? He was formerly … CONTINUED
We’ve heard the upcoming M3/M4 at high speeds on the Nurburgring, but haven’t had many chances to hear it accelerating from a stop. Well, here’s a good listen, as this F80 M3 prototype was spotted by BIMMERPOST member KKM3 on the Pacific Coast Highway last night.
The M3 here doesn’t accelerate to redline nor at wide open throttle, and the clip is short, but we nonetheless get a good sound preview of the car’s inline 6 cylinder S55 engine and exhaust.
Here is KKM3′s reaction to witnessing this M3 in person:
I spotted this car last night around 9pm driving north on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. I knew right away it was the new M3 and I was determined to get a good clip or … CONTINUED

MANUAL TRANSMISSION OR NOT?
As for today’s rumor out of Autoblog that there will be no manual transmission option for the M4, we submit contrary evidence in the form of: photos, videos, and VIN (options) information. The photos clearly show an early F80 M3 prototype with a 6 speed manual, the videos show what appears to be manual prototype M3 and M4 (judging by the shift and RPM patterns), and the VIN information shows prototypes with and without a DCT option.

The following are the prototype VIN information that we’ve previously posted. As you can see, the … CONTINUED
As you’ve seen, we spent the latter half of last week at the Pebble Beach Automotive Week in Monterey, California, which is an annual week-long banquet of events for automobile enthusiasts and connoisseurs who converge on the Monterey area. While the collection of automotive hardware (everything from some of the most expensive classics to the latest model exotics) spotted around the Monterey peninsula was the largest and most impressive gathering we’ve ever witnessed, the highlight of the trip for us was having the first look at the BMW M4 Coupe Concept, which BMW unveiled at several events throughout the weekend. The following is a brief timeline, our personal reaction to the M4 Concept and some interesting notes on the M3/M4.
