Victorious twice before at the classic sports car racing endurance event (2011 and 2012), the 62nd edition of the longest half-day in motorsport relinquished only a third place finish to the No. 55 BMW Z4 GTLM for the team’s second consecutive podium of the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. Just a few weeks after its official launch, the new BMW M4 DTM [Official Details] now has three new looks. As well as the BMW M Performance Parts M4 DTM, which Martin Tomczyk (DE) will drive in the 2014 season, the first images of the cars to be driven by Joey Hand (US), Bruno Spengler (CA) and Timo Glock (DE) have now been released.
Three of last year’s four driver/car pairings remain unchanged. With the 12 Hours of Sebring USC (United SportsCar Championship) race set to take place tomorrow, BMW has posted a video providing a lap through time, which flips through photos of its Motorsport history.
The newest model to join BMW Motorsports will be the BMW M4 DTM car which did not make it into this video, but will begin racing in this year’s DTM race series. The M4 DTM will make its first public appearances at the official ITR tests in Budapest (HU, 31st March – 3rd April) and then at the final test in Hockenheim (DE, 14th – 17th April). The 2014 DTM season starts on May 4, 2014 at Hockenheim.
After years of financial trouble, the publicly-owned Nurburgring has finally been sold and privatized. Dusseldorf-based automotive supplier Capricorn has won the bid to purchase the Nurburgring.
Capricorn beat out American firm HIG Capital in its bid for the Ring. The deal is reported to be for approximately 100 million Euro, with an upfront investment of 25 million Euro (to expand/improve the track).
Capricorn produces engine components and employs more than 350 employees. The company already has an on-site factory at the Nurburgring which manufactures crankshafts, camshafts, pistons, and other engine parts. Its parts have been used in 10 F1 maufacturer’s championships, 9 F1 driver’s world championships, 10 WRC manufacturer championships, 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup wins, 7 overall Le Mans wins, 10 Dakar wins, among others.
The very first BMW Art Car, a BMW 3.0 CSL, designed by American artist Alexander Calder, will be a key highlight of a class of BMW 3.0 CSLs at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The class will include both the winners of the 1975 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the 1976 Daytona 24 Hour race. BMW Group Classic will showcase the heritage of the BMW 3 Series in a display that will feature a first-generation 3 Series in the US, the 320i, as well as the first BMW 3 Series Convertible. BMW has unveiled the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car, which looks to preview a host of carbon fiber M Performance Parts.
The M4 Safety Car will start its service during the MotoGP season start at Qatar in 16 days.
The submission of the necessary papers for the aerodynamic homologation of the 2014-spec DTM cars to the Deutsche Motor Sport Bund (DMSB) also marks the end of a busy, and yet exciting, period for BMW Motorsport. Development work on the BMW M4 DTM, which will compete in the forthcoming DTM season, has been in full swing in recent weeks and months. As of today, it is no longer possible to make modifications to fundamental areas of the car, heralding a new phase of preparations for the start of the season in Hockenheim (DE) on 4th May. The forthcoming tests will primarily focus on optimising detailed aspects of the total package and understanding how to exhaust the full potential of the BMW M4 DTM.
