Woodcliff Lake, N.J – March 25, 2011… BMW Motorsport announced today that Joey Hand will join teammates Dirk Müller and Andy Priaulx to drive the No. 56 BMW M3 GT at this year’s 24 Heures du Mans endurance race on June 11-12, round three of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC). The same trio driving the BMW Team RLL M3 GT had the perfect start to the ILMC season and American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season with the GT class win at the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 19.

The very first race of the 2011 American Le Mans Series racing season just concluded at the 12 Hours of Sebring and the BMW team picked up right where it left off last season when it won the Manufacturers Championship – this time with a 1st and 2nd place finish at Sebring!
The #56 BMW M3 placed 1st and the #55 M3 placed 2nd. #56 was driven by Dirk Müller (DE), Joey Hand (US) and Andy Priaulx (GB), while #55 was piloted by Dirk Werner (DE), Bill Auberlen (US) and Augusto Farfus (BR). BMW has officially debuted the 1M coupe MotoGP Safety Car. At the curtain raiser on 19th March, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe will for the first time be deployed as the official Safety Car for the MotoGP events – in advance of its market launch late in April. The BMW Safety Car is a one-off built by BMW M GmbH specifically for this race series. Only the 250 kW/340 hp straight-six M TwinPower Turbo engine and the entire drivetrain were taken over unchanged from the production model.

The 1M MotoGP Safety Car was recently unveiled and will be one of the M cars serving as a safety car for the 2011 MotoGP, the world’s premier motorcycling championship. But the 1M coupe won’t be serving its safety duties in regular form. It has been gussied up, sporting an Akrapovic exhaust, large rear wing, large M striping, black wheels, black exhaust tips, vented hood, black grilles, and a front spoiler chin, some of which we hope will become available accessories.

This Saturday, March 19th, the American Le Mans Series picks up the 2011 season with the 12 Hours of Sebring. BMW Team RLL is set to continue last year’s success of winning both the Team and Manufacturer titles in the GT class. For 2011, BMW Team RLL will race two newly constructed BMW M3 GT cars (picture shows the 2010 model). The drivers for the no. 55 BMW M3 GT will be Dirk Werner (Germany), Bill Auberlen (USA) and Augusto Farfus (Brasilia) while Dirk Müller (Germany), Joey Hand (USA) and Andy Priaulx (Great Britain) will alternate behind the wheel of the no. 56 M3 GT.

As part of BMW Group’s partnership with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and four National Governing Bodies (NGB) – USA Bobsled & Skeleton, US Speedskating, USA Swimming and USA Track & Field – BMW consulted with the teams to find out how the automaker can help the teams improve their training and performance.
