After 7 controversial years, iDrive is now in its second iteration. The system, which is already on the road in the new 7-Series and updated in the 3-Series and 1-Series, will be forthcoming across the entire BMW lineup. BMW is proud of this very fact; that the same system powers all the vehicles in its lineup offering a level of cohesiveness in the brand which is unmatched at this time. To date, there are over 2 million cars sold using the iDrive system.
The new system began development in 2002, just one year after the launch of the original iDrive. The system went through various stages of development which included cockpit models, two concept cars, and prototype cars equipped with various iDrive elements for real world testing. Additionally four sites were … CONTINUED

BMWs next-generation 6-series has begun testing, as evidenced by
these shots of a prototype caught on German Roads. Somewhat
surprisingly, our first look at the 6-series follow-up is of the drop-
top variant. The prototype appears to wear a combination of
camouflage panels covered in BMWs trademark psychedelic swirl
veneer. Design details are tough to make out through all of the
visual clutter, but it appears that the new 6-er will follow the route
of the second-generation BMW Z4–ditching some of its more
controversial styling elements in favor of a new-found elegance and
clean-ness of line. Many will welcome a more straight-forward
approach, especially the toning-down of the infamous Bangle-butt,
which is more pronounced on the current 6-series than on any other car
in BMWs current model-range.

BMW is exploring a plan to build what a senior company official calls “a breakthrough green supercar” by the end of 2012.
The new car would rival the Audi R8 and forthcoming Mercedes SLC, and has been described by company insiders as a puristic two-seater that draws on all the very latest BMW technology and lightweight build processes.
The car is also intended to showcase BMWs Efficient Dynamics programme, combining fuel-saving technology such as direct injection, brake energy regeneration and stop-start.
A source privy to early design proposals says that the new BMW supercar will be the equivalent of a modern-day M1, a car that the company recently made reference to with the retro M1 Homage concept.
The as-yet-unnamed new model will be capable of combining supercar performance and driving dynamics with fuel consumption … CONTINUED
BMW is rumored to have plans to revive the 8-Series name for a potential “four-door coupe,” much like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. New 8-series would compete closely with the new Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera.
Beginning of the year BMW placed Gerhard Richter in charge of development of its new Gran Turismo model, which is based on the popular CS concept car. New model will be called either simly GT, short for Gran Turismo or 8-series. Most likely the car will get the previous 8-series models name so that BMW can position it as the highest, most luxurious and expensive model.

At the Convergence 2008 conference on automotive electronics yesterday, BMW revealed it is looking for partners as it pursues an open-source car computing platform. The German company is enthusiastic about the potential for such an open-source systems potential to keep up with the rapid advances in technology and features in the multimedia and digital entertainment areas.
Though no other car makers are yet officially on board, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and Honda have previously participated in a panel on the subject, reports Automotive News. BMW said it wants to have an open-source system in a vehicle selling 200,000 or more units over the next five to seven years.
The newly revealed tie-up with Mercedes-Benz could make cooperation on this front likely as well, since whatever software is chosen will need a specific … CONTINUED
