In what could be the best thing to happen to iDrive since its inception, BMW on Monday announced it will offer full-blown Internet access in its cars via the controversial interface in North America. Back in February, BMW announced this ability is coming to Europe as part of a ConnectedDrive option package.
The system will only allow web browsing when speeds are below 3mph, but rear-seat passengers, provided the vehicle in question is equipped with a rear entertainment system, can browse the web at all speeds. The … CONTINUED
According to BMW chief executive Norbert Reithofer in a pre-release of his interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the next generation 7 Series, which is coming out later this year, will get some sort of hybrid powertrain. The details of this powertrain are still in the air as far as we know, but we have a feeling it will be inline with what Lexus has been offering and will be decidedly weighted towards power. BMW is poised to give the go-ahead to a tiny Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) that will help to revolutionise city-centre driving. The rear-engined city car could be called Isetta and will first arrive in American showrooms in 2012.
The project was created because of new Californian regulations (soon to be copied by 12 other US states) which require big car makers to sell between a few hundred and a few thousand ZEVs every year from 2012.
