BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has once again confirmed at BMW’s annual financial results press conference today that “there will be front wheel drive BMWs in the smaller vehicle classes in the future.” New FWD and AWD drivetrains are in the works and will be used in a new range of smaller entry level BMW cars and Mini cars. The new FWD models will slot in under the entry-premium 1-series models, which will keep their RWD architecture.

The F10 Alpina B5 has been undergoing testing near Alpina’s headquarters. The F10 B5 is expected to be based on the F10 550i, with a reworked 4.4L N63 motor (V8 twin turbo). The new B5 features the current signature front bumper lip, sideskirts, wheels, quad exhaust, and raised trunk lid. An impression of the final B5 is below.

Going back to last year, it was rumored that BMW is developing a FWD entry-level model (0-series ?) based on Mini architecture. This has now been confirmed by BMW chairman Norter Reithofe at the Geneva motor show! Speaking to Autocar, the chairman officially acknowledged plans to produce an Audi A1 rival under the BMW marquee.

Insideline reports that there is no BMW M1 coming. This comes after the nonappearance of the M1 concept at the 2010 Geneva Motorshow, at which it was expected. Instead there will be a hopped up 135is version of the 1-series. But, BMW insider Scott26 maintains that the M1 is coming. Who really knows? Nobody but Rumplestiltskin!
