Yesterday we brought you photos of the first preliminary stage F80 M3 prototype hitting the Nurburgring, and we’ve updated the gallery today with photos of the first advanced prototypes also undergoing testing concurrently. It appears that BMW has F80 M3 models at different stages all testing at the same time at the ring
It is always a special thing when a BMW begins development testing at the Nurburgring. Not only does it reassure us BMW faithful that Munich’s finest is being properly developed and tested on the world’s most hallowed racetrack, it also marks the next step towards final release of the car.
Looking at the car itself, it seems to be an earlier prototype which still retains the body armor protecting it from revealing eyes and cameras. However, it does appear when looking at our earlier more revealing spyphotos and videos that the design is already complete. However, what many of us speculate is not complete is the development and decision on the power train. I include the word decision because as there is debate among enthusiast circles about … CONTINUED
The F01 7-series is due for a facelift and the prototypes continue to undergo public testing.
Expect the F01 7-series LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) to be unveiled next Spring. The biggest changes to be seen will be to the front fascia. Full LED headlights will come to the 7 series for the first time. Underneath the camouflage tape, the bumper directly underneath the headlights will transition to the lower part of the kidney grilles with a more pronounced ’swoop’ line (not pictured in render). The lower bumper will take on the attractive look of the BMW Concept 7 Active Hybrid from 2008.
The Kidney grilles will receive a thicker and more pronounced grille surround and thicker angled kidney grille bars found on some 6 series and 5 series … CONTINUED
The F30 3 series will be fully revealed to the world this Friday, but its dashboard has now been revealed in these spy photos. Although these are not great quality photos, what’s seen here does appear to match up to the F30 interior spy photos we’ve previously posted.
As expected, the F30’s dashboard is a bit of a mix between the F10 5 series and F21 1 series, with the large fixed screen that we’ve seen in previous spy photos.
The dashboard trim appears to be quite a bit taller, but shorter than the E90/E92’s trim and is an attractive black wood grain in this particular model.
We recently reported the first sighting of the upcoming 6 Series Gran Coupe on the Nurburgring, and the M Sport version has now hit the ring for the first time.
The 6 Series Gran Coupe will feature M sport exterior styling from the 6 Series M Sport which adds an aggressive flare to the Gran Coupe’s very sleek shape. Current expectation is for the Gran Coupe to hit showrooms in 2012 as a 2013 Model Year vehicle. Engine range is expected to be identical to the 6-Series Coupe.
The 6 Series Gran Coupe will take on the Mercedes CLS and Audi A7 directly.
Just 2 weeks to the day before its debut, the F30 has shed more of its camouflage, revealing the lower front bumper and sideskirts.
If the F20 1 series is any indication, it’s possible we could be looking at the F30 Sport Line model. As pictured below, the F20 Sport Line also features a very similar design on its bumper inlets, with horizontal bars running from the fog lights.
Like the F20, the 2012 F30 3 series is expected to be available in different ‘lines’ - possibly a Sport Line, Modern Line, and Luxury Line.

Exciting news! After several sets of spy shots, we’re happy to finally share the very first spy video of the 2014 M3 Sedan, internally dubbed the F80. As usual, this video provides a much more dynamic impression of the car than photos. No surprise that the new M3 looks very planted as it’s sitting fairly low and shows no body roll in these (admittedly) urban driving scenes. Overall, the M3 with its M bumpers and bulging wheel arches looks pugnacious and much more aggressive than the F30 3-series in the F30 spy photos/videos.
What’s new in this video besides the live view and sounds? Looking at the F80 from behind, you can finally make out the limited slip differential and two mid pipes running from the engine … CONTINUED
Now that the F80 M3 sedan has been given the greenlight, our spies have spotted the F80 M3 continuing its public road testing. While the camouflage on the F80 prototype remains the same as before, we’ve got some more angles to share with you - a slightly higher-down look than before. The F80 M3 continues to show off its attractive proportions and shape, while looking more aggressive and ‘beefier’ than the standard F30 3 series due to its widened wheel arches, M styled front and rear bumpers and sideskirts, and quad exhaust. It does not yet show the sportier mirrors that the production version F80 will receive.
If you take a close look, we may be looking at a different front end on the F80 M3 than … CONTINUED
We last spied the F30 hybrid back in February for the first time out in heavy camouflage. It has now shed its heavy camouflage and taken to the Nurburgring for track testing. One can tell this is a hybrid version by the typical “Rescue” stickers on its doors and rear bumper (which is always present BMW’s hybrid test vehicles).
The F30 3-series will be the first 3-series hybrid from BMW and will adopt much of the technology from the upcoming hybrid F10 5-series which is scheduled to debut this winter. The F30 hybrid will be released some time after the diesel and petrol F30 models are released next year.
