Where: Monterey, California - January 30-31, 2012
What: F30 US Press Launch. First Test Drives of 2012 335i and F30 6 speed
How: 2 days with F30 3 Series, including a half day on the Laguna Seca track.
Background: I’ve owned an E90 325i (auto) and current car is E90 M3 (6-speed MT).
335i (With 6 Speed Manual):
The all new 2012 335i sedan is powered by the N55 single turbo twin-scroll turbo inline-6 cylinder engine (with direct injection and valvetronic), in the same form as the outgoing 2011 335i E90 sedan and current 335i E92 coupe. The U.S. 335i is quoted as producing 300hp / 300 lb-ft torque and achieves 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds for both auto and manual. Maximum horsepowers is achieved at 5800 RPM and max … CONTINUED
So, how do you properly test the performance of the new 2012 3 series F30 sedan? You take it out on a race track like Laguna Seca, as we did earlier this week.
But, if you really want to see the true limits of the F30’s performance, you hand it over to the professionals. BMW ALMS driver Bill Auberlen and ALMS+DTM driver Joey Hand were in attendance at Laguna Seca raceway to give us (and our members/readers) a wild ride around the track in both the F30 328i and 335i. Both the 328i and 335i were Sport Line models and had manual transmissions. The F30’s limits were phenomenal in their hands and we truly enjoyed their F30 review!
Both Joey and Bill were truly enthused about the … CONTINUED
Autospies shares their very comprehensive and excellent video review of the F30 328i, powered by the N20 4 cylinder 2.0L turbo engine. In their experience, they feel that the 3 series once again delivers a knockout punch to its competitors from Audi, MB, and Lexus.
Especially impressive in the video is a look at how quickly the new 8 speed automatic transmission shifts.
We’re coming to you live from the 2012 3-series F30 reveal event in Munich and to say that it’s been an exciting reveal would be an understatement!
BMW rolled out all three F30 lines at the event. We’ve posted a huge gallery below of each of the F30 Sport, F30 Modern, and F30 Luxury line models. Enjoy!
Be sure to catch all the F30 details at our 2012 3 Series Official Info Thread
Just 2 weeks to the day before its debut, the F30 has shed more of its camouflage, revealing the lower front bumper and sideskirts.
If the F20 1 series is any indication, it’s possible we could be looking at the F30 Sport Line model. As pictured below, the F20 Sport Line also features a very similar design on its bumper inlets, with horizontal bars running from the fog lights.
Like the F20, the 2012 F30 3 series is expected to be available in different ‘lines’ - possibly a Sport Line, Modern Line, and Luxury Line.

F30 PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
The F30 3-series sedan will begin production in November 2011 (see chart below), shortly after the E90 3-series stops production in October. The F30 2012 … CONTINUED
We last spied the F30 hybrid back in February for the first time out in heavy camouflage. It has now shed its heavy camouflage and taken to the Nurburgring for track testing. One can tell this is a hybrid version by the typical “Rescue” stickers on its doors and rear bumper (which is always present BMW’s hybrid test vehicles).
The F30 3-series will be the first 3-series hybrid from BMW and will adopt much of the technology from the upcoming hybrid F10 5-series which is scheduled to debut this winter. The F30 hybrid will be released some time after the diesel and petrol F30 models are released next year.
Despite the myriad of F30 3 series sedan test mule spy photos we’ve posted thus far, there has yet to be a direct F30 versus E90 3 series spotting, until now. Although it’s only one view for now, it gives us the best idea yet of how the new 2012 3 series F30 sedan will compare to the outgoing E90 3 series with respect to size, proportions, rear styling, and stance. Thanks to F30post member CSL-Fanatik.
Based on shape, the F30 appears more evolutionary than revolutionary a design, unlike the current F10 5 series which threw the E60 design language out the window in favor of a wholly new design.
The F30 and E90 seem similar, which should assuage the fears of 3 series fans who cringe at … CONTINUED
We bring you a preview of the BMW F30 3 series’ production front end styling via our set of renders. These were constructed by analyzing the 100% uncovered F30 spy pics recently posted, together with input from Scott26, who has seen the production F30 design. It was confirmed that these images are representative of the real life F30 front end design.
The F30’s front styling will represent very unique elements never before seen on a production BMW. The headlight-grille area features deep set headlights which dip inward to expose the sides of the kidney grilles. We’ve been getting hints of this new styling element with recent BMW concepts (see below). This innovative design not only differentiates the F30’s front end look from the rest of the BMW … CONTINUED
