The long rumored 2 Series Gran Coupe has yet to be spotted in testing, but we’d be highly surprised if BMW did not go after the CLA and A3 sedan with its own small sports sedan. The company is seemingly entering all niches in which its German competitors have offerings, even niches with much smaller sales potential than the small sedan space, so we expect to see a 2 Series “Gran Coupe” sedan after the Coupe and Convertible 2 Series are released. Artist Theophilus Chin has rendered what he thinks the 2 Series Gran Coupe may resemble, drawing heavily upon the nearly fully uncovered M235i Coupe we showed you four months ago.

The M235i / 2 Series is due soon and while we wait, it’s undergoing some final performance testing on the Nurburgring, where it’s said by BMW to be able to beat the 1M Coupe.
Klaus Froehlich, Senior Vice President Brand and Product Strategies at BMW recently revealed these little tidbits:
The M235i is as close a spiritual successor to the 2002ti that we’ve had. My initial benchmark was that it will be faster than the BMW 1M Coupe around the Nurburgring, which it is.”I have just signed off the M235i’s M Sport performance kit, which will include a proper limited slip differential. I’m just working out whether to make this an option on all models.

The upcoming M235i Coupe will beat the 1M Coupe around the Nurburgring, so says Klaus Froehlich, Senior Vice President Brand and Product Strategies at BMW. In speaking to Autoexpress, he states that:

First sighting of a white BMW M235i coupe.

Generally speaking, it does a decent job at previewing the M235i, although it does have to make some predictions as to the rear view and tail lights, which remain partially covered in the spy photos. Its surfacing is also too flat in some areas, as the actual M235i’s hood and front fascia have more shape and curves.

We’ve spotted the BMW M235i Coupe again and although it remains in the previous stage of camouflage (you’ve seen it revealed in the photos below anyway), this is our first ever look at the 2 Series Coupe versus its older brother to be, the 4 Series Coupe.
Next to the 435i, the M235i appears to be a bit taller. But, it’s clearly narrower and cuts a squatter figure than the sleeker and more stretched 435i coupe. Remember too, that the 2 Series prototype still wears some heavy camouflage on its hind quarters and rear, which gives its rear half a bulkier appearance than on the production model.

Spy photos of the upcoming 2014 BMW 228i coupe in Orion Silver.
The 228i coupe will join the M235i coupe as the first two 2 Series models available in the US. Both models will begin production in November 2013, as a 2014 model year.

A BMW 2 series prototype crashed on the German Autobahn yesterday evening. According to the article, the driver lost control of his car at high speed, clipping 50m of the beam barrier on the right hand side of the road and came to a rest after another 150m in the left hand lane. Furthermore, 4 other cars on the other side were hit by debris. Luckily the driver sustained only minor injuries and no one else was hurt.
