The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) will be upping its crash test standards for 2013 and the new standards have proven challenging for the nearly one dozen 2012 entry-level luxury sedans the agency tested, so far.

Only the Volvo S60 and the Acura TL earned top marks. The Infiniti G received an acceptable rating, while the BMW 3 Series (F30), Acura TSX, Lincoln MKZ and Volkswagen CC all earned a marginal grade. The Audi A4, Lexus ES, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class ranked at the bottom of the segment with the agency: Poor.

Watch the gauge clusters (speedometer and tachometer) of the 2012 328i and 335i accelerating side-by-side in full out acceleration runs from a stop. Gives a good idea of how the two compare in terms of acceleration.

We’ve also added previously posted videos of our experience with the two models from the BMW press drives, both at our own hands and with the skills of professional BMW drivers Joey Hand and Bill Auberlin.
