We’ve just learned from our source that BMW has officially approved the production BMW i8 Spyder for a late 2015 introduction. The approval came last Friday and a production intent model was shown internally at BMW. It was an i8 Spyder in Solar Orange (same color as on i3) with blue highlights, of which we’ve produced a preview rendering below.
Mechanically, the i8 Spyder will share the i8 Coupe’s powerplant and drivetrain. Stylistically, it will be identical to the i8 Spyder Concept, but with the production styling aspects of the i8 Coupe.

I found out about this event while I was at the LA Auto Show and of course attended last week.

Robertson also said the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car due to be introduced in mid-2014 has sold out for its first year of availability. He did not say how many the company will sell in that first year.
Cool video of a BMW i8 production photoshoot in NYC drawing the attention of many New Yorkers.
The production BMW i8 is making its North American premiere at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, looking striking in Crystal White.
This particular i8 was available for us to sit in and we had some great up-close looks at the many areas of exposed carbon fiber as well as the interior, which you can see in our photos. The interior materials felt good and the seats hugged well. Ingress/egress is difficult though as expected with a design like this. You can tell by the photo of the gentleman. It’s great having the exposed carbon fiber to see and touch. The doors feel surprisingly light, even when you already expect it to because of their carbon fiber construction. And regardless of … CONTINUED
