We recently traveled to Road America in Wisconsin to sample the new M4 and M3 for the North American press launch. As a previous owner of a Silverstone II 6 speed E90 M3, I was excited to drive the new Ms to find out how they compare!

Manual Purists Rejoice

The first piece of great news about the new M4 and M3 is that BMW offers the three pedal manual transmission as standard.

Here is a translated version of some of the highlights of Sport Auto review of the F80 M3 and F82 M4.

No rpm, no sound and irritating turbo lag? By corner 9 and 11 all the concerns of the traditionalist have disappeared. Lightfooted the M3 storms through the Samsung corner and up the hill.

5600, 6600, 7600rpm, the new engine doesn’t reach the high 8300rpm limit of the old V8. But for a turbo it revs astonishingly high. … CONTINUED

At the PDC for a 2-Day M School and noticed these guys hanging out. Apparently they were here for some press drives. M4 in Sakhir Orange. M3 in Austin Yellow and Alpine White.

Rear tires on the AW M3…toast. I tried to get a good pic of the driver seat with the cloth, but with the windows closed and the way the lighting was, it just washed out.

As far as when the M3/4 will become part of the fleet for the M Schools, … CONTINUED

Preview of the much anticipated F80 M3 / F82 M4 video review by Chris Harris.

Here are his testing notes:

Engine
Weird noise to begin with. No word of a lie, I laughed out loud when trying to define it – all I could think was ‘mapped 335d’. It’s less musical, lower frequency and less clearly straight-six than the M235i I’m currently driving. At first I didn’t like it much, then it became a non-issue and after thrashing around a circuit for a while I almost liked … CONTINUED

As said by head of BMW M Product Management, Carsten Pries:

BMW M’s product planning chief says the next-generation M3 model family could be powered by a four-cylinder engine, despite the fact the Bavarian performance brand is currently without any four-cylinder models.

Speaking at the international launch of the all-new F80/82 M3 and M4 in Portugal over the weekend, BMW M Division Head of Product Management Carsten Pries told motoring.com.au it was “foreseeable” that a four-cylinder engine could power the next generation of the iconic model.

BMW M3 and BMW M4 Inside (part 5): smartly light, rigid, precise. Interview with M engineer Florian Staiger.

BMW M3 and BMW M4 project engineer Florian Staiger.
Florian was in charge of integration of the complete vehicle.

It is generally the case that the top model of the regular series is lighter than the M automobile that is derived from it. Why is this so?

Historically, the M automobile always used to weigh about 100 kg more than the BMW vehicle it was based on.
