Development continues on the upcoming F34 3 Series GT (Gran Turismo) model, which BMW is testing concurrently with the other future F3x variants - the F32 coupe, F31 touring.
We’ve now spied the GT model with its trunk/tailgate open, revealing its exact trunk line. These photos also confirm what we’ve said earlier - that the 3 series GT will feature a simple hatch function rather than the twin trunk arrangement on the 5er GT.
We also get some more looks at the F34’s retractable spoiler, the first on a production BMW. As seen in the older photos we’ve reposted below, when the spoiler is deployed, we can see the trunk cutout for it to slot into when retracted, for a flat subtle look. Expect this spoiler spoiler to … CONTINUED
We’ve posted plenty of spy photos and videos of the next generation M3 sedan (F80) but this is the first high speed chase video we’ve seen, and the chase car is no slouch. Watch as a tuned BMW 1M coupe (with 420hp) pushes a F80 M3 prototype to 240+km/h on the Autobahn.
The F80 M3 is due to debut in the second half of 2013, likely for market release in Europe at the end of 2013 and in the US early 2014.
The Nurburgring testing season has just opened and the first BMW prototype model that we’ve spied is the upcoming M6 Gran Coupe, due to become the upcoming flagship M model upon its release next year.
The M6 and 6 Series Gran Coupe represents BMW’s first foray into the luxury “coupe” sedan niche and just as the standard 6 series Gran Coupe will compete with the Mercedes CLS lineup, the top of the line M6 variant will take on the Mercedes CLS63 AMG directly. If these photos of the M6 GC being pushed extremely hard on the Ring are any indication, the CLS63 AMG will soon have a fast and great handling nemesis to contend with.
The remaining camouflaged portions of the M6 GC do not conceal much as … CONTINUED
We continue to spy the BMW F80 M3 sedan conducting winter testing in the frozen surroundings of Northern Sweden. This time we’ve got 3+ minutes of footage on the next generation 2014 M3.
Two days ago we brought you spy photos of the 2013 BMW F80 M3 sedan being cold weather tested in Sweden. We’ve now put together some live video footage of the F80 M3 making its rounds on BMW’s winter test track.
Perhaps the 3 Series GT (F34) has sportier intentions than most would expect. If the retractable spoiler spotted on this F34 prototype for the first time is any indication, BMW expects the 3 Series GT to be driven with plenty of gusto and not relegated to only people and cargo hauling.
As seen clearly in the photos below, the spoiler is retractable and not fixed. When the spoiler is deployed, we can see the trunk cutout for it to slot into when retracted. Like other cars with retractable spoilers (i.e. Mini coupe/roadster, Porsches), expect the GT’s spoiler to deploy at higher speeds to increase downforce. Besides its functional purpose, the spoiler certainly also adds some sportiness to the aesthetics of the GT’s rear.
Since this … CONTINUED
The upcoming flagship M car - the M6 Gran Coupe, has now begun cold weather testing in Sweden.
It will directly challenge the 2012 Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG by utilizing the best BMW has to offer in terms of quality of materials and powertrain. The M6 Gran Coupe will be powered by the 4.4L twin turbo V8 S63Tu engine, but may very well feature a power bump from the standard M6 coupe and cabrio’s 560hp (maybe in the range of +20hp or so) in order to give it the leading power figure among all M models. Power will be delivered via a standard 7-Speed DCT transmission.
The M6 Gran Coupe’s premiere should come in the second half of this year (in the Fall) we believe.
As for styling, since … CONTINUED
It’s been a while since the last F80 M3 spy photos, but we’ve now spotted the next generation F80 BMW M3 Sedan undergoing winter testing in Sweden. Compared to the previous spyshots, the F80 prototype has lost a bit of camouflage - mostly at the rear which now shows the tail lights in their full glory. The car’s appearance is low, wide, and impressive with massive fender flares. The M3’s kidney grilles are also very obviously styled in a sleeker/sportier shape than the F30 3 series sedan.
We also spot 4 piston fixed caliper brakes at the front and 2 piston fixed piston calipers at the rear axle, mated to the M trademark slotted drilled brake discs. BMW M’s newly developed active rear differential will likely make … CONTINUED
