German publication AMS decided to pit two popular diesel SUVs against each other — the BMW X3 xDrive 30d against Audi Q5 3.0 TDI Quattro or 258hp/413 lb-ft inline-6 vs 240hp/369lb-ft V6.

The outcome is that both cars are similar in many ways, but the BMW X3 manages to get the edge and wins this comparison. Details inside.

Over 52 teams from 21 European countries competed in the recently concluded BMW X3 Games 2011. Over 15,000 registrations entered for this contest of physical and sports events in Geneva to win three new BMW X3s (for the winning team). The 6 disciplines in which the contestants competed were: running, golf, skiing, driving, mountain biking and sailing.

In the end, it was team from Hungary who each went home with a brand spanking new X3.

Audi’s all new Q3 has just been released, which was not unexpected considering Audi has a vehicle in every segment that BMW has one.

The new Q3 is certainly aesthetically pleasing, but when I first saw it, I didn’t have a strong reaction one way or the other. I think that is a function of the fact that like most Audis today, it is fairly similar to every other Audi product, especially the Q5. So while it’s not ugly, it is a bit booring to me.

Regardless, we bring you this photo comparison between the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1, a car which has been on the market for 2-3 years now. You be the judge! (Try voting in our poll above)

Many times when reading reviews on cars, we get caught up with 0-60 times, handling, looks, the typical things that are REALLY important in any car. But its good to take pause, take stock of what any given car is intended to do, and judge the car by those factors. And this is exactly what the New York Times has done when reviewing the X3, there is no doubt this is a family vehicle, and they go into their review with that mentality. And so I think they’ve given an honest and fair assesment of the X3 and they come out bullish on the small SAV from BMW.
