We’ve all seen plenty of photos of the new 2012 M5′s imposing biturbo V8 S63Tu engine, which produces a whopping 560hp. But what exactly are we seeing when we peek under the hood of the F10 M5? Here is an explanation of some of the components seen on the S63Tu engine, as well as how they work together.
As we reported earlier, the engine of the F10 M5 isn’t a direct swap from the X5 M and X6 M but a substantially revised engine. In an interview with M-Power.com, Jürgen Poggel, Head of Engine Development at BMW M GmbH, now shared more details on this engine. Compared to the S85 engine of the E60 M5, BMW claims that “VALVETRONIC has also sharpened the responsiveness of this engine [S63Tü].
Here are the highlights of the new M5′s S63Tu engine and how it’s different from the S63 engine used for the X5 M and X6 M.
Two more innovations of the S63Tü:
- Innovative solenoid valve injectors in the new BMW M5 engine use multiple injections to achieve an extremely precise mixture preparation.
