The next generation M3 is still at least 3 years from its debut, but it’s never too early for speculation, particularly about its powerplant. While the current E9x M3 is powered by the marvelous high-revving V8 engine (S65), it’s been widely speculated that that the next generation M3 will return to using a 6-cylinder engine. Emissions regulations have forced the move, much like the new upcoming F10 M5 getting the more efficient S63 V8 Twin-turbo engine instead of continuing to use the iconic V10.

Here is a new rumor regarding the next generation F30/F32 M3′s powerplant – that a 3.3L V6 tri-turbo motor is a possibility! One turbo would power the motor generally, and the other two turbos would each be dedicated to 3-cylinders each.
Talk of next 1-series M already?! Now that the 1M has been revealed, Scott26 has already turned to talk of the future of the 1M (or M2 as it may be called), as well as the M-Division’s future, which may bring more track/performance focused 1M and M3 special models, as well as potential Z4M and X3M models!
