Are there any M versions of i cars in the pipeline? No, according to Cypselus von Frakenberg, BMW Group head of technology communications. Speaking at the Frankfurt IAA show, Mr. Frankenberg says that not only was there zero input from M engineers in the development of the i8, but there will be no M version in the future. In his words:
“It is separate – M and i,” he begins. “It’s two different sub-brands, but there will be no ‘M’ i-car in the future.
“These [M] are the high performance cars with combustion engines, and on the other side you have the ‘i’ cars with electric drive. They won’t come together.
“I don’t think that it would make sense to mix these two sub-brands in one car. We … CONTINUED

Along with the 4 Series and X5, which had their media launch this past week in Seattle and Vancouver, BMW also brought out the 2014 5 535d (with LCI refresh) and the 2014 M5 with competition package for us to check out. Here are some on-location photos of the 535d M Sport and M5 Competition (this M5 does not wear the Competition Package wheels which come with the package).
The 535d is new for the US market for the 2014 model year. A 3.0-liter twinpower turbo diesel outputs 255 horsepower and a peak torque of 413 lb-ft, while getting 38 MPG.

The F82 M4 coupe and F83 M4 convertible continue testing and we continue sharing pics with you.
Once it’s fully revealed, we will see an M4 convertible which shares the M4 coupe’s styling (and mechanicals), save for the roofline and trunkline. To give you an idea for how the M4 convertible will look once all the camo comes off, check out our production M4 renders below.
The one clear difference is that the M4 convertible features a different roof — in the form of a non-carbon fiber folding hardtop. It will operate and fold in the same manner we’re used to seeing on the E93 M3 convertible.

Although the focus of the BMW NA Launch Event we attended was the 4 Series Coupe and new X5, there were also a few M5 and M6 equipped with Competition Package for us to test out. And flog it we did.
The M5/M6 Competition Package both include a Competition Exhaust System.
Keep in mind that the Competition Package Exhaust is not the same system as the titanium M Performance Exhaust which will be coming for the M5 and M6 (see our preview clips). The Competition Exhaust is positioned between the stock exhaust and the M Performance Exhaust.

We recently showed you an advanced F80 M3 prototype in what looked like Singapore Gray Metallic (reposted below). Now see the latest prototypes in black and Silverstone.
Once again, we’re treated to some great looks the F80 M3′s massive fenders. The F80 M3 shares virtually the same styling as the M4 except for the more prominently flared fenders and a different trunk design (no CSL style curve). The two share the same front front fascia and headlights, rear bumpers, sideskirts, hood bump, exhaust design, double-bubble carbon fiber roof and wheels. They will also share the same powerplant and drivetrain.
Ordering for the M3/M4 will be available beginning in January-February and production begins in the March-May time frame. Deliveries will begin by early Summer.

Last year, Mr. Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO of BMW of North America, confirmed to us an inline 6 cylinder engine for the upcoming M3/M4, and we showed you spy photos of the engine. Despite these confirmations, stubborn rumors pop up periodically regarding a potential V6 configuration for the upcoming s55 engine.
If you needed any further convincing, now hear it from the BMW NA CEO himself (again).
