BMW M CEO Friedrich Nitschke gave some insight into certain aspects of future M models when speaking recently to Autocar.
AWD vs RWD
While current non-SUV M models all remain RWD, as horsepower numbers climb for each successive generation of models, the question has arisen whether future models would benefit from AWD xDrive offerings, to help with traction and getting all that power down to the ground effectively; especially considering the AWD offerings from competitors – such as the E63/CLS63 AMG 4Matic and upcoming RS6/RS7 Quattro models.

We’ve previously posted photos of the 2 Series coupe (F22) and convertible (F23) testing, but we’ve not spotted them testing together, giving us a great look at how the two models compare visually.
The F22 coupe seen here is a M235i model judging by the blue M Sport brakes and split dual black exhaust tips (also seen on the M135i upon which the M235i is based).
The M235i coupe (315 HP) is already confirmed for the US (see VIN details). Production will begin in November 2013 in … CONTINUED
Besides our earlier spy photos, here is the first factual confirmation (via VIN search) of the US bound M235i F22 coupe, together with a preview of some (perhaps not all) of the upcoming 2 Series Coupe and Convertible model lineup.

According to an Autocar source, Arnd Meyer, the head engineer responsible for chassis engineering of all recent AMG models, including the SLS AMG Black Series, has left Mercedes and joined BMW M.
The source says that Meyer will eventually head BMW M’s chassis, powertrain and electronics development, although an AMG spokesperson has suggested that a contractual agreement (presumably, a non-compete clause in his employment contract) may prevent him from doing so for some period of time.
This news comes on the heels of this recent report that … CONTINUED
A speculative render of a still speculative model – the BMW M2 Convertible. According to BMW insider Scott26:
Such a concept remains a possibility, especially with the M2 becoming a series production car. The rear lights are similiar but in the actual car they wrap around in the opposite direction as proved by a recent bodyshell spy photograph. Aerodynamics are still too dramatic.
Thus far, the spied camouflaged 2 Series Coupe and Convertible prototypes remain under heavy front camouflage, obscuring the front fascia design.
But BMW insider Scott26 has shared with us this sketch of what to roughly expect from the 2 Series. As one can see, the smaller (compared to F20) headlights will join the kidney grilles as we’ve expected. The front end’s general look is certainly sportier and more angular based on this sketch.
Here is the 2 Series Coupe (F22) prototype and the closest look yet at BMW’s upcoming compact sports coupe. This may be the 228i model, which joins the 235i and M235i as prototypes we’ve now spied. See the full 2 Series spy photo archive.
The closeups here give the best look yet at the 2 Series headlights, which are indeed much smaller and sleeker than the headlights of the F20/F21 1 Series hatchback (with which the 2 Series lineup shares a platform). While the inside corners … CONTINUED
Another resident artist, Harold Wood, renders a potential future BMW M2 Coupe. The M2 has not yet been officially confirmed nor denied by BMW, but if the 1M coupe’s success and its following is any barometer, we bet on yes for a future M2 coupe.
Car and Driver reports on some BMW M2 rumors. As reported by Jens Meiners:
The M version of the upcoming BMW 2-series coupe and thus the successor of the immensely good 1-series M coupe. Unlike its predecessor—which was rushed through development in record time, known internally as Project Pyrat—the 2015 M2 will undergo a longer gestation, allowing BMW to come up with a more polished package. Look for aggressive restyling, strongly differentiated from the M135i that’s available in overseas markets. The M2 will feature a … CONTINUED
We bring you the best look yet at the 2014 2 Series Coupe (F22), this time in red. We previously posted photos of the M235i coupe and other 2 Series coupes, but this is the first clear look we’ve had of the F22 from all angles.
These photos provide an excellent look at the headlight shape, which are much sportier and sleeker than the much maligned headlights of F20/F21 1 Series hatchback (with which the 2 Series lineup shares a platform). The photos do not yet … CONTINUED
