Have a look at some videos showing the assembly and internals/technology of the N20 engine.
The BMW N20 is a turbocharged inline 4 cylinder DOHC engine which replaced the N52 and BMW N53 inline 6 cylinder engines beginning in 2011. The N20 is an inline 4, but is considered a replacement for the straight-6 N52 and N53 because it powers equivalent models. It features a twin-scroll turbocharger, variable valve timing (VANOS), variable valve lift (valvetronic) and direct injection.
The N20 is currently used in:
E89 Z4 sDrive28i
E84 X1 xDrive28i
F25 X3 xDrive28i

Four award-winners spanning a displacement range of 1.6 to 4.0 litres – BMW Group again emerges as the most successful auto manufacturer in the internationally renowned engine contest.
Unbeaten titleholders and triumphant newcomers have secured the BMW Group’s renewed pre-eminence at the 2012 International Engine of the Year Awards. Powerplants guaranteeing efficient power delivery in current BMW and MINI models topped no fewer than four out of eight displacement categories. The quartet of trophy-winners comprised two four-cylinder engines, a straight-six and an eight-cylinder. Scooping up best-in-class wins were the 1.6-litre turbo unit of the MINI John Cooper S, the four-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that drives the new BMW 328i, among others, the straight-six with M TwinPower Turbo of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, … CONTINUED
Here is the BMW press conference for the 2011 New York International Auto Show, held two days prior to the actual show – at BMW of Manhattan. The various products showing at the NYIAS are discussed. There is also a separate introduction video to the new N20 turbo 4-cylinder engine.
The NYIAS will be upon us next week and there will be two exciting BMW premieres coming to the show: 1) New generation TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine and the first vehicle to carry it, and 2) New BMW 6 Series Coupe (F13).
The new TwinPower Single Turbo 2.0L 4-cylinder N20 motor has already debuted in the European X1 xDrive28i. At the 2011 NYIAS, this new motor will be presented with the first BMW model to receive it in the United States. The N20 motor features direct injection and valvetronic, and is good for 245hp / 258 lb-ft torque and 35.7mpg – all better figures than the 3.0L inline-6 motor it will replace.
So what model will debut the N20 motor in the U.S.? According to our previously posted … CONTINUED
We previously reported that BMW has plans to expand its TwinPower Turbo technology to its entire future 4-cylinder engine range. Word now comes from BMW AG that the future 3-cylinder engine range (gasoline and diesel) will also receive the TwinPower Turbo treatment.
The TwinPower Turbo package combines a single twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection and full variable valvetronic. It first debuted on the N55 motor in the 5-series GT in 2009 and most recently on the first 4-cylinder motor, with the 2.0L N20 gasoline engine (full N20 details) in the X1 xDrive28i. The use of this technology allows for increased horsepower while decreasing CO2 emissions. As an example, the N20 outputs 245hp compared to just 156hp from the naturally aspirated version.
No timing yet on when the first TwinPower … CONTINUED
Here’s a neat animation of BMW’s new Twinpower Turbo 4-cylinder Motor (aka N20). This new engine is a 2.0L gas powered 4-Cylinder engine which uses BMWs TwinPower (single turbo – twinscroll) turbo technology, good for 245HP and 350Nm of torque. This engine is closely modelled after its 6-cylinder brethern N54 and uses an all-aluminium crankcase, precision direct fuel injection, with VALVETRONIC.
The N20 engine will make its US debut in two models later this year. There’s no official word yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it was the X1 and the Z4 28i.
The N20 engine is now powering the X1 28i in Europe and the first reviews of this motor have been positive (preliminary N20 reviews).
We’ve confirmed the new turbo I4 is a single turbo twin-scroll setup, running at 17.4 PSI max, and tops out at 7000 RPM redline. See the full details of the Twinpower turbo 4-cylinder inside.
