We’ve just spied the X3 LCI (Life Cycle Impulse, AKA “facelift) prototype for the first time. As seen on the mule, the X3 LCI will receive an update front and rear bumper, side mirrors, and headlights, as has been the pattern for recent BMW LCI models.

The headlight shape does not appear to be changing, but we may see updated lighting elements within the headlights, as we did with the recent 7 Series LCI. We do not anticipate that the headlights will be connected with the kidney grilles (in keeping with BMW’s current and future styling trend) and the camouflage doesn’t appear to be hiding such a change.

The side mirrors will get shapelier and lose their blocky squared-off shape. The interior has not been spied yet, … CONTINUED

BMW of North America announced today a continuing evolution of efficiency, power and technology with the introduction of the new TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine (N20) to the X3 xDrive28i. The new engine replaces the outgoing nominally aspirated inline 6-cylinder engine (N52) as the next step in BMW’s EfficientDynamics strategy. It is scheduled for April 2012 production and delivery to US BMW Centers in May along with the continuing BMW X3 xDrive35i with a base price including destination and handling of $37,995 and $43,595 respectively.

In addition, the updated X3 xDrive28i and the X3 xDrive35i now in its second year of production will offer new technology never before offered on the X3 by introducing new combinations of package and equipment options – a new Driver Assistance Package option … CONTINUED

In each of their segments both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5 are seen as the benchmark for agility and driving pleasure. In the spring of 2012, the sporting character of the two BMW X models will be further underscored by innovations added to the range of engines and equipment features. A new and particularly powerful N20 engine for the BMW X3 xDrive28i, Driving Experience Control for individual vehicle settings for all variants of the BMW X3 and the M Sport Edition of the BMW X5 ensure targeted optimisation of sporting qualities.

Furthermore, the choice of optionally available driver assistance systems featured by BMW ConnectedDrive is being further extended for the BMW X3.

The Range Rover Evoque has been a darling of the automotive press since its introduction, culminating in it winning 2012 North American Truck of the Year. But, in a recent Consumer Reports test, the 2012 X3 slaughters the Evoque in a road test, 80 to 60 in the point total.

Although we’ve been expecting this news, here is finally official confirmation that the 2013 BMW X3 28i will change to the new 2.0L inline 4 cylinder N20 engine. This switchover will occur as of April 2012 production (for the MY2013 X3).

Some new options will also be offered on the 2013 X3 – namely the lane departure warning and speed limit info features.
