Celebrating its premiere at the BMW i Store is the new BMW i Pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle) Concept – a custom-made complement to the BMW i3 Concept. The ace up the sleeve of the compact bicycle? It can be folded up almost in the blink of an eye and, handily, there is room for two of them in the boot of the BMW i3 Concept.

BMW i has come up with an innovative two-wheeler, which acts as the perfect complement to the BMW i3 Concept and adds a new and convenient layer to personal mobility, particularly in urban areas. The new BMW i Pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle) Concept is a compact bicycle fitted with an electric motor that tops up the rider’s muscle power with an extra … CONTINUED

The 2012 Apple WWDC (developers conference) keynote presentation has just wrapped up, during which Apple unveiled the new iOS 6 for all iOS devices. One of iOS6′s new features is one which will have implications for BMW models.

A new feature called “Eyes Free” will officially integrate Siri functionality into cars. BMW, together with eight other automakers, will be launching products to integrate Siri into their cars within the next 12 months (the others include GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda). Apple briefly described Eyes Free in this way: “Hands-free allows you to keep your hands on the steering wheel while you’re using your phone. We want to integrate Siri even better in the car.”

Two Companies Collaborate on Navigation Systems That Boost Fuel Economy While Improving Urban Mobility

NOVI, Mich., June 6, 2012 — INRIX, a leading provider of traffic information and driver services, announced at Telematics Detroit that BMW of North America, LLC has selected INRIX’s premium traffic information for next generation connected navigation systems in North America. As part of a multi-year contract, BMW is teaming with INRIX to provide drivers with real-time traffic, traffic-influenced turn-by-turn directions and alerts to accidents and other incidents along their route.

For manual BMW fans, there may be hope yet! A knock against manual transmissions now is fuel consumption (compared to the latest autos). With 7, 8 or even 9 gears, automatic and automated transmissions have an efficiency advantage as the extra gears allow for more economical gear ratios (think of really long 7th and 8th gears to improve MPG figures). A manual transmission cannot match this as the spacing of the gears for the shifter become too close to each other. But, we’ve now discovered a patent filed by BMW last year which shows that the company is exploring a manual transmission with 7 or more gears which solves these issues. Porsche by the way, also recently released a 7 speed manual in the new 911 … CONTINUED

Preh GmbH, an automotive supplier to BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, of climate controls, driver controls, sensor systems, ECUs, and instruments panels, has released a clip which previews some of the uses and functions which a touchpad iDrive controller could incorporate and facilitate.

A prototype touchpad iDrive controller system has already been spied on the 2014 BMW X5 (F15) test mule, so we can expect it to begin appearing on BMW models by the end of 2013 / early 2014 with the release of the 2014 X5.

Some of the features shown in the video (such as blackpanel surfaces) do not apply, as it was part of a new center console design concept presented by Preh as the 2007 IAA, but what’s interesting is seeing the use of an … CONTINUED

BMW may have produced the MiniE and ActiveE (electric versions of the Mini Cooper and the 1 Series Coupe), but EV West, a California conversion shop decided to electrify a more performance based nameplate – the M3… the E36 M3 to be exact.

EV West took a 1995 BMW M3 and replaced its 6 cylinder 240hp S52 engine with a NetGain DC electric motor and Evnetics Soliton Shiva motor controller, packing 420 totally green horsepowers!

For its first real test, this M3 will compete in “electric” heat of this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado (also known as the “90th Race to the Clouds”). It will be competing against 6 other electric cars in its race heat, but none are based off a conventional car like … CONTINUED

New optional feature for all BMW 5 Series: individualised cockpit thanks to multifunction instrument display.

An optional feature [from July] that will enhance operation of the automobile in all BMW 5 Series models (except BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition and BMW ActiveHybrid 5): the multifunction instrument display. This is a freely programmable cockpit display that introduces a new dimension to driver information. Enhanced Black Panel technology opens completely new possibilities for the display of information. Via the high-grade, homogeneous black surface of the 10.25-inch display, the freely combinable instrument integrates significantly more functions than the conventional instrument panel that it is replacing. However, the familiar arrangement comprising four round instruments still remains. Two chrome rings, which open up towards each other, are visible on the black surface. Together … CONTINUED
