The turbo 4-cylinder N20 engine has impressed Autoweek in their first experience with it, in an X1 28i. They felt that it was terrifically refined, always urgent, with particularly strong low-end attributes and impressive flexibility across a wide range of revs. In addition, the N20’s power builds in a smooth, free revving fashion without any hint of turbocharger lag. Overall, they called this newest BMW engine pleasing to drive and highly efficient. Full review inside.
Some weeks ago, we brought you information on BMW’s new turbo inline 4 petrol engine (N20B20) making its debut in the X1 xDrive 28i. Reviews from the first new X1 xDrive 28i press drive event in Slovenia are slowly trickling in this week, so here’s a roundup so far.
In sum, all reviews out so far have nothing but good words for the new engine. The only drawback mentioned coming from the N52 is the engine sound. Other than that, all mags loved the low end torque which BMW apparently managed to combine with enough grunt at the higher revvs.
FYI, BMW has also hinted at the 1-series hatchback and the 3-series getting this engine when the new models launch later this year and early next year, respectively.

According to C&D, BMW has confirmed that the X1’s release in the US market has been delayed until the Fall of this year due to unexpectedly high demand for the model in Europe. Evidently, the Leipzig, Germany, production plant in which the X1 is built (alongside the 1-series) can barely make enough of them for the European market, and to add the considerable demand of the U.S. market to the production fray is not possible at this point. However, the X1 will come to the Canadian market early this year as originally planned.
Sharp eyed member twenzel spotted this X1 in Wilmington, NC. Past rumors had pointed to an official annoucement of the X1s US arrival during the LA Auotshow. Those rumors have now moved to the Detroit Autoshow next week. The exact date of this annoucement is still unknown, but lets keep hoping theres substance to these rumors and the car arrives stateside soon!
