Although the BMW X4 has not yet been spotted in any public testing, it’s been confirmed by BMW. AutoBild utilizes some of BMW’s latest styling elements (including the exposed side grilles of the F30 3 series sedan), to produce renders of what they think the upcoming BMW X4 SAV may resemble, as well as the future iterations of the X1 and X5. They even threw in a render of a fantasy X2.

The long rumored BMW X4 SAV is coming! In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer confirmed the plans for BMW’s newest SAV.

The X4 will be positioned above, but based on the X3. It will be 4.65 meters long (183 inches), which is the same length as the X3, and will share the F25 X3′s range of engines. But due to its coupe-like styling, the X4 will have less trunk volume – approximately 500 liters less, or 17.6 cu ft.

Is the X-coupe concept from 2001 being revived and being studied for possible production? Yes, according to Scott26. With the Porsche Cajun and Land Rover Evoque small SAVs hitting (or scheduled to hit) the market, BMW is said to be considering an X-coupe type car with which to compete with. The “0 Prototype” featured and teased prominently in the recent Plan 0 video (a look into BMW’s secret prototyping process) is likely to be the future BMW X4 SAV, which will take on the coupe SAV look of a baby X6, albeit in smaller form. Evidence comes via Scott26′s words, the presence of personnel from the Spartanburg plant (where X models are produced), and close resemblance to speculative X4 renders.

Here is an fascinating look into BMW’s Research and Innovation Center and the prototyping/design process of the first prototypes of each BMW model, each built by hand. Especially cool is the look into a “0 Vehicle,” a prototype milled out of a solid block of aluminum to help ensure the highest quality standards. Its purpose is to check that every single body part fits the body exactly to spec. There’s also some insight into the camouflaging process.
