Actually, I did just link my key card to my profile.
Thanks to the tips above, I reviewed the profile linking menu and did not see an option to link to a key card, just a digital key (the menu description specifically describes linking to a digital key on a phone that you place in the charging tray) or a pin.
By way of experimentation, I entered the vehicle with my fob and the vehicle identified my profile, as expected. Placed the key card in the charging tray, where it must be to start the vehicle with the key card, and selected to link my profile to a digital key.
Exited and locked the vehicle, then, without the fob present, re-entered the vehicle and I'm welcomed with my profile name on the iDrive screen, just as with my key fob.
