BMW earned a record profit in the second quarter of 2011, the highest profit margin of all 3 top luxury car makers. BMW’s second-quarter Ebit climbed 66 percent to 2.86 billion euros
The record sales and profit have been driven by demand of the 5-series and X3, as well as growing sales in China. Deliveries of the 5 series jumped 80 percent this year and the X3 has more than doubled, resulting in an 18% rise in BMW brand’s first half deliveries. BMW is currently producing at its production limits.
In its latest customer survey – the Automotive Performance and Layout Study (APEAL) – assessing satisfaction levels among North American new car buyers, the BMW 5 Series range, BMW X3, BMW Z4 and MINI Countryman emerged as winners of their respective vehicle segments. In addition, four more models from the BMW Group finished in the top three of their category. This tally means the BMW Group boasts the highest number of segment winners of all manufacturers in the latest APEAL survey.

BMW has scooped up no fewer than three of the coveted awards presented by the German Design Council in the Automotive Brand Contest, the new international brand and design competition launched this year. The winner of the “Architecture & Events” category was the SESTOSENSO light installation created in collaboration with FLOS and light designer Paul Cocksedge, while the BMW 328 Hommage won the “Concept & Study” category. The new BMW 6 Series Coupe also came away with a prize in the “Exterior” category. With these three accolades, the German Design Council pays tribute to the outstanding level of BMW Group design. Ludwig Willisch (55), currently responsible for the BMW Group’s European sales region, will take over from Jim O’Donnell (61) as president of BMW of North America, effective October 1st, 2011. Willisch, who holds a degree in economics, began his career with the BMW Group in 1996 as manager of the BMW branch in Düsseldorf. He gained further national and international sales experience as head of the local sales subsidiaries in Germany, Japan and Sweden. Prior to assuming his current position as head of European sales, Willisch was president of BMW M GmbH.

The closest automotive brand is Mercedes-Benz at #8 and Audi at #11. From the rank list it appears that the last time the list was compiled, BMW was ranked behind Mercedes. DesignworksUSA, the design consultancy and subsidiary of BMW Group, announces the start of an ambitious urban transit project in collaboration with Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), the Bay Area’s regional transit provider. Together with BART, DesignworksUSA will create the “Fleet of the Future,” a new generation of train cars that will enter service by 2017 and deliver a premium ridership experience for its passengers. BART, which began picking up passengers in September 1973, presently operates the oldest fleet of train cars in the USA.
