According to BMW chief executive Norbert Reithofer in a pre-release of his interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the next generation 7 Series, which is coming out later this year, will get some sort of hybrid powertrain. The details of this powertrain are still in the air as far as we know, but we have a feeling it will be inline with what Lexus has been offering and will be decidedly weighted towards power. It should be a great addition to the BMW lineup and may be a signal of great things to come from BMW on the EfficientDynamics front.

In order to keep up with the Jones’ BMW has had to think a bit outside the box. Our sources indicate that the transmission BMW will utilize takes up the same amount of space as the current 6 speeds and will not use additional components. This has been made possible by a completely new transmission concept. We have learned that it utilizes four planetary gear sets and five transmission clutches. Two transmission clutches are unlocked per gear, thus resulting in greater efficiency and a higher overall transmission ratio.

The BMW 7 Series unmasking continues!

Wow, stop the presses. Looks like someone at BMW screwed up and let the all new BMW 7-Series get photographed without any body cladding.

Here is a single profile photo of the upcoming 7-series which shows both the standard 7 and the long wheelbase version.

It is true that over the years, the current 7-series went from ugly duckingling to pioneer, with many industry leaders eventually copying the infamous bangle-butt. But flattery aside, it is evident that BMW will not repeat that design language and is moving into a more flowing type of design.

Many industry reports have already signaled the front end design of the new 7-series will follow the BMW CS design presented in Shanghai, but now we get an idea of what the rest of the car will look like. These brand new sketches seem to be inline with the media rumors that the next 7-series, which has been spied in heavy body clad form driving around germany, to follow many of the design themes of the recent BMW Concept CS. The car will share a similar face to that car, the body does remain more inline with the current 7-series, in order to maintain the optimum passenger comfort and visibility.
