Switching driving modes often...is it bad??

So I have a bad habit of not being able to decide on what mode do I want to drive my car so I end up switching to different driving modes so often while driving. I'm just wondering if that is bad for the car or if I would run into problems in the future because of this bad habit. Does anyone know?

I think you'll be fine. It's meant to be done on-the-fly anyway. I always used to leave it in comfort, but now I find my button-pushing ritual upon startup always involves disabling Stop/Start and switching into Sport Mode right away.

You'll be just fine. I switch modes so frequently, that I have turned off the option for my Screen to Display the mode change, because it slows the change down. (Also don't want to upset my wife when she is in the car, by letting her see the change on the screen, and having her scold me for putting it into "Sport" Mode, LOL).

I didn't know that was possible! Going to do the same thing!

I've done the same thing. It's annoying when it pops up on the screen.

How is this done? Coding only or?

I switch it around pretty much every time I drive. Use Eco sometimes when stuck in traffic. Comfort seems slow-ish, but Sport seems a bit too twitchy in throttle response for me. Can't make up my mind

Anyway, it's adjusting shift points and throttle (pedal) response. Shouldn't hurt anything...

Switching into Sport Mode also disables Start/Stop, so step #1 is not needed here.

ASS can be coded by your dealer to retain it's last setting.
So, if it was off when you shut your car off, then it will remain off until you activate it again.
This is THE best method by which to deal with ASS, if you don't like having it active every time you start the car.

I had my 2013 335i coded a couple months after getting it, and my 2016 340i was already coded to retain the last/previous setting.

I thought that BMW coded all of their cars to retain the previous/last ASS setting some time around late 2012?
Maybe not?
Anyway, you can have your dealer code it.

My 2012 328i does not disable Start/Stop upon switching to Sport Mode unfortunately. If I have it off and I switch into Eco Mode, it does automatically turn back on.

Even if you code it to remember last setting switching to Eco-Pro will disable ASS being off iirc.

That would make sense. I have no coding done to the vehicle anyway - yet.

I am surprised that ASS stays on while switching to Sport Mode on my car. I doubt even Sport+ would cause it to turn off automatically. I may just code it out eventually, but coming from driving a 2006 Mazda3 with 307,000km for 7+ years I'll enjoy whatever luxurious features my new ride has to offer for now

I've read articles stating BMW tested starters with the ASS feature an absurd about of times to ensure beefed up units could withstand repeated starts but tbh I don't think it's true, plus older f30's (like my '12) seem to stutter way too much when using it.

Mine doesn't stutter much, but I honestly feel like regardless of what BMW or any manufacturer says - turning an engine on and off in excess of 40-50x per drive will cause more premature wear on engine parts vs. having ASS disabled. Cool feature, but my fuel economy seems to do just fine without it being active.

Is there any coding available so that the wife doesn't get upset when changing modes? I have the same problem!!

Just adding to this comment, your dealer should do this update FOR FREE. There was a TSB about it. I bought my CPO 2012 F30 in April of 2014 and took it back a week later with the TSB in hand (didn't need it, my dealer was aware of it already) and they did it for free (along with updating all the software at the same time).

Here is the link to the thread that discusses it:

You mean coding for the wife? Unfortunately can't help you there, lol. But the setting to turn the car mode display off is in I Drive.

Yeah mine did it for free, I just asked them, and they coded ASS to last state, which works great for me. (This was before I learned to code)

I would hate when ASS was on and you are trying to park, it would stop the engine right in the middle of the parking maneuver!!

I think most newer BMW cars are coded last state, but the funny thing is my brother's 2016 X1 still has it coded to come on by default.
