how soon after taking delivery can you wax?
is the paint totally cured? On a car I had just body work done on at a high end shop, they said wait 3 months before waxing the area.... your opinions on whether this holds true for a new car arriving from Germany in a week?

Doesn't hold true for new, factory applied and baked paint. I think you may mean polish, which is okay as well but hopefully not necessary.

Polishes are abrasives that can correct paint imperfections by removing small amounts of paint/clearcoat. Think of liquid sandpaper (an exaggeration in some cases but you get the point.) Wax provides a protective and gloss enhancing finish - no abrasives, though some derivatives have fillers that can temporarily mask imperfections in paint. If you don't understand the differences, you shouldn't be using any polishes yourself without reading up. Plenty of good sites out there with guides for beginners, including the videos posted in this forum.

thanks signes... yes indeed I will read up plenty before I apply any chemical to the car. sounds like wax is the first and only thing to do... sounds like polish comes later in the cars life... once you get swirls or whatever... yes, I will do some reading. Ideally I would like a good detailer to come out and do it instead.

You can wax as soon as you get the car, it won't harm the paint at all. Clay bar the car thoroughly before you wax though, as you don't want contaminates getting trapped beneath the wax.
As for polish, it depends on the type of clear coat applied to the car. Some clears can be polished within a day of drying, others you should wait weeks or months. |
