There's just no way it can work. If I vote Romney then all you rightwing buffoons might actually shut the fuck up. If I vote Obama--my true choice--I'll be thrilled if he wins, but I won't ever hear the end of it from my friends who claim to be "socially liberal and fiscally conservative."

I have to vote and I know I'm voting Obama, but I just don't want to advocate for behavior like we've been seeing. I wish we could stage an election boycott (Don't tell me why that would make us look weak to our enemies and blah blah blah. With the state of things, I'd rather the whole world just perish before I retire).

There will always be people who disagree with you, your actions, or decisions. At some point you can't worry about the opinions of others. Instead worry about what you feel is the right thing to do.

So, who are your friends voting for then ? As far as I can tell, neither of the 2 main candidates fit the bill of being both socially liberal and fiscally conservative. Depending on who you vote for, you can get 1 or the other, but not both at the same time (for POTUS at least, cant speak to the local candidates in your area)

I would think that the fact there is no available choice that meets both of their criteria should concern them more than who you are voting for.

They call themselves socially liberal to justify their fiscal perspectives. Whether they are or aren't is not the point. They like to think that the democrats will be happy as long as gay people can get married and women can have abortions, and as such believe that there are enough liberal-minded people in this country to prevent a total right-wing takeover. I've always voted democrat and I will continue to do so, because my money is irrelevant so long as I have enough of it to pay taxes and give to charity and enjoy my life in comfort. Obviously that's a dumb statement, but the point is, I know I don't need to fight to keep my money as long as I keep making it.

The reason why I said I don't want to vote is that I don't want to encourage this highly adversarial behavior among all Americans. I just don't feel right about it. I feel like the person that sees a crime and does nothing to stop it.

There's only so much each of us can do as individuals to try and slowly bring around a more harmonious political environment. It's hard to change others.

It's clear you have always been a democrat, and always will be. Perhaps if the divisive nature of the country really bothers you so much, then maybe you can start by changing yourself, and refraining from referring to those who vote for the other party as "buffoons", as you did in your first post, that might be a small step towards a more collaborative posture... just sayin....
