Non BMW Extended Warranty?
I am currently in negotiations with the purchase of a 2011 135i (w/DCT) from a non-BMW dealer when the option for an extended warranty came up. Normally I wouldn't give it much thought but this time I am considering this option. The terms are $2,195, $2,295, or $2,495 for 48, 60, or 72 months respectively. They all go to 100K miles and have a $0 deductible. The carrier is AUL.
My question is would/has anyone gotten a non-BMW extended warranty and what was there experience with it? Also, because the car is being sold at a non-BMW dealer, could I still purchase a BMW extended warranty from BMW? Obviously I am taking the car to BMW before I purchase it either way and, pending there assessment, I will purchase the vehicle. I'm thinking I should just pocket the cash and hold onto it if something were to happen. After all it still has the BMW warranty until October 2014 and mileage wont be an issue since I drive approximately 60 miles a week max. |

I bought a 2009 135i two months ago with a non-BMW dealer warranty.
It was expensive ($4000), but it's transferable and covers everything up to 200,000 km, and the best part is that there is no time limit. The car has 60,000 now, i could have it for 10 years before i hit 200,000. |

Yeah, I have a Non-BMW warranty on my car... it's my second BMW (with the same warranty company). First time around, they were pretty decent. They repaired my convertible top and then did almost $3000 worth of repairs. Warranty cost me about $2100 and I used it for well over $5000 worth of work, before crashing the car in an accident of course

I was under the impression that most of these aftermarket warranties weren't worth the investment but its good to hear that some pay for themselves. I looked up AUL and the BBB has them graded at a "A".

I bought my 1 for under 20k, have a 3rd party warranty on it for an extra 2k. The car had 75k on it when I bought it. The warranty is 3/36 and my loan is 4 years, with the mileage that was on the car it seemed logical to essentially prepay for future repairs instead of being hit with unexpected expenses as these cars (BMWs in general) are not cheap to repair.

This is good info. I will be looking to purchase extended warranty when my existing BMW warranty expires. I hope this thread gets more post and more information in it. I'm sure a lot of us wouldn't mind having some information on non-BMW extended warranties. I was planning on just going with BMW for my extended warranty. After reading this I will look into other options more.

Read up on the BBB - their ratings are suspect.

Of course most people won't see their investment returned, otherwise these companies wouldn't be in business. Unless something catastrophic happens to your car such as a blown engine, turbo etc., it's unlikely the warranty will pay for itself. My warranty is through Fidelity and so far I've used it to replace a broken window regulator and some other parts. It saved me a $300 repair bill at the dealership but it's still less than what I payed for the 100k-mile coverage. Still no regrets as I own a first-year 135i and wanted a little extra peace of mind.

With the warranty i have from Nationwide, if it expires and i haven't made a single claim, they will refund the entire cost of the warranty.

I don't think that this is the "Nationwide" you think it is. That is not Nationwide insurance in the US - It is a Canadian company selling aftermarket service warranties, gap insurance, etc.

If you can shell out the money for it its totally worth it, I didn't have any sort of warranty for mine and had to pay $1200 just to get the water pump replaced...

I have a "covers everything" Easy Care that covers me all the way to 100K (not sure on the amt. of years, though). In addition I have the remaining factory warranty for another two years or 50K (28K on the clock right now).

highly highly recommend CNA warranty. Not only do we sell them at the dealer i work at (and all dealers in our auto group) but i have one on my 08 1er and it has paid for itself. they cover almost everything minus regular wear items (clutch, brakes, air filters, etc) and hardly ever put up a fight. They sometimes will send an inspector out just to make sure the shop isnt up to anything suspicious but as long as you're taking your car to a reputable place the repairs almost always get approved. I have a $200 co-pay on mine meaning i only pay $200 no matter how much the total repair costs. We have some customers with copays as low as $50 as well (obviously this will cost more)

wicked, and anyone else who may know:
Will CNA or others do an extended warranty if you get a Dinan Stage 2 flash? BMW flags the car, won't CPO it, and won't offer their extended warranties, but what's unclear to me is if any other, third-party companies follow suit and either won't offer it or may deny something down the road blaming that. Any help would be greatly appreciated as nobody seems to know the answer to this. A third-party company may just not know or care, but trying to figure this out before possibly getting the flash. |

A article in Consumer Reports April 2014 page 21 will answer your question.
Some of you are paying way too much. The right price should be around $2K. Also you should get the BMW extended warranties. There are three types, and they are easy to read and understand. Remember you can only get them while the car is under the maker's original warranty. I'm still trying to decide if it is worth the money for an extra three years? |

From everything I have researched, aftermarket warranties are not worth the paper they are written on.
