Coolant temp going down when idle in freezing temp?

Hey guys, quick question for the more educated..

We are talking about outside temperature being -9C (16F)
My coolant temps go all the way up to 90C and stay there when i drive with the fuel being burned..

However if during the warm up or after the temp has reached the 90C i stop and let it idle then the coolant temp slowly moves down.. after driving for 20 minutes i stopped and i saw the temperature go all the way down from 90 to 76 when idling.

So are my termostats bad? Or are they on the way? I changed them 6 months ago

Or is it normal giving the freezing temp and everything around being cold.
Maybe if i drive for an hour and everything in the car is properly warmed up it will be different? i might check.

Thanks

Hi, it might drop a few degrees on idle, but not to 76 celsius. I would suggest replacing both thermostats (EGR and main one). Mine normal temperature is 88-89 degrees, on cold weather on idle it can drop till 84-85 degrees.

Also, what thermostats did You bought? I always stick with OEM for the main thermostat, and Behr for EGR.

For anyone searching this, it actually did probably drop because of the vehicle being frozen all around, because as the temperatures got higher throughout the year iv never experienced anything like that again..

It's pretty normal in a diesel, they are very thermal efficient (Which means they shed heat very well)
