403M to VMR's - Simple swap?
Hey guys (and girls)
I've recently noticed my wheels start to corrode on my 403M's 19" and after doing a quick search found this to be quite a common problem. I have contacted BMW and have a date to pop down and get some photos done and hope to get it sorted through warranty (12 month used car warranty). I've never really taken to the wheels though and after doing a bit of research found the VMR V710's which I absolutely love. I contacted the EU store and been suggested to order two 8.5 x 19 and two 9.5 x 19. (Is this the wheel width? I've no idea?!) My tyres have only recently been changed so I've got the Bridgestone Potenza's 225 40R 19 BY and 255 35R 19 YB fitted. Is this simply a straight swap? Is anything else needed other than taking the new wheels to the tyre shop and getting them swapped over? Just want to make sure before I start ordering.... (tyre size edited) Last edited by johnnybforbacon; 05-24-2018 at 11:41 AM.. |

yes, the 8.5" & 9.5" are the width of the rim. I'm pretty sure your fronts will be fine, but I don't know if the 225 for the back will fit around a 9.5" rim without being stretched too badly.
is your car xDrive? if so, you need to take into account the rolling diameter of the wheels; there cannot be more than a 1% diameter discrepancy from front to back.

If you just purchased a square set of tires and intend to keep a square stance (which I personally reccomend) you should get four identical sized wheels. Stock size is 8 inches, 8.5 can work with 225 section tires (although I'm confused why you have 40R and 35R tires ???) and will allow you to fit on larger tires in the future. What is important is the offset, width is the easy one. I believe VMR designates 8.5 et35 as their "direct fit" F30 size.

Yes it is xDrive. I'm guessing it should be 8.5 x 19 all round then? |

xDrive is confusing to buy things for, you're not alone haha I've been there done that.
the WIDTH of the tire (8.5", 9.5") is essentially irrelevant to the xDrive system, all you need to worry about there is whether they will rub the inside of your fenders when turning. the DIAMETER of the tire (225) is where it matters. try this link: https://tiresize.com/comparison/ if you put your front sizes in slot 1, then rears in slot 2, it'll tell you the rolling diameter difference from front to back. this is the number that matters as it must be less than 1%. it is much easier to run a square setup (same size on all 4 corners), but if you're more of a spirited driver like myself, you may wanna put the extra time & money into getting a staggered setup. I did, & I have no regrets! Good Luck!! ps: for reference my setup is 20x9 235/35/20 on the front, & 20x10 275/30/20 on the rear. the rolling diameter difference on this setup is exactly 0%

I've just pulled the car out and checked the tires, to make extra extra sure because I actually measured the widths and the backs were definitely wider... The actual sizes are: Front - 225/40R19 89Y Rear - 255/35R19 92Y Does this sound right for an xDrive? Sorry for all the confusion! |

"My tyres have only recently been changed so I've got the Bridgestone Potenza's 225 40R 19 BY and 225 35R 19 YB fitted." Just to let you know, this is not a safe combination for xDrive vehicles and can damage your transfer cases. BMW says not to deviate more than 1% in diameter between axles/tires, the 35's are 3.4% smaller in diameter. Are the tire sizes you listed accurate? EDIT: Saw the post above, 255/35 is the OE spec and only .4% smaller in diameter than the 225/40. Perfectly safe.

yes those sizes are correct, they're exactly what came on my 440i.
& no worries, xDrive is nit picky & these are expensive cars, it's always best to take your time & ask any questions you have so you don't mess up & regret it all later! cheers!

I think your original post had a typo as well. It's most likely 225/40/19 fronts and 255/35/19 rears to match OEM sizing. In which case those new wheel sizes would work. It would be better to go wider with tires down the road.
