I've seen both styles side by side and I had a M4 following me the other day and I tell you the LED's are worth it. They look so aggressive and they make the Xenon's look cheap (no offence to those who have it) I see the same thing when I see the new X5's, M5's and M6's.

Having seen at least 10 cars with the Xenons during our group euro delivery, I can tell you that they do NOT have the camera behind the rear view mirror like the LED cars do. I have also not seen the standalone option in the US for auto high beams with the HIDs.
Finally, the angel eyes do look substantially different between the two. The LED rings are a bit thicker. They also are uniform. The HID rings have a single LED post right at the base of the ring that illuminates the ring. It is very obvious and stands out as a bright point of light in the front of the headlight housing. |

I notice the focus of the beam is slightly sharper on the LED versus HID on other cars. The light is also more of a white light color, doesn't mean that is better. Some people actually like the yellow color temperature. I chose the LED just because I know that a retrofit is not possible.

Just go down the the dealership, they will have a number of cars in there with LED upgrade. I have the LED upgrade on my X6, personally I think they look awesome and well worth the $1900. But each to there own so your best going to checking them out for yourself.

But with parts and labor it'll be a heck of a lot more than 2k as you'd have to swap both headlights. |

I had my LED coded and they are unbelievable. They split so you don't blind the car in front. They turn 1 side to low beam while keeping the other side on high. Well worth the money if you get them coded. If your not going to code them than don't wast your money.

Only in America do you need to code them. Our regulations are arcane so BMW turns the anti-dazzle features off.
Cheers.

From what I understand, the system is totally legal or more like, there isn't any regulation against it. The NHTSA are dinosaurs. Many new safety features that are standard in cars overseas are disabled because they hate change. Same goes for rear fog light feature. Think of this LED package as an updated version of when your turn your steering wheel, the lights turn in that direction. This is already in many cars so BMW's version is more autonomous. If cops pull you over for that, its likely cause of their lack of knowledge about it.

Lighting Package... Worth it?
New to Bimmerpost! Coming over from a '12 S4. On order is a mineral grey M3 spec'd as follows:
* Full SO Interior * 19" Light Alloy Wheels * DCT * Carbon * M Adaptive Suspension * Executive Package * Harman Kardon I've been on the fence regarding the Lighting Package...thoughts on the extra $1,900. Worth it or not? Go! |

They are definitely not needed, but they do make your car look more premium and advanced with full LEDs. It's also a cool feature how it adjusts during nighttime driving. Personally, I would get it, I love the 3D look of the Full LED package Corona rings.
