These electronic keys agree a code with a car out of a temporary pool of 256 numbers.The actual pool is somewhat 1 trilion numbers. If you press the fob button more than 256 times while far away from your car, the password will have to be resync'ed according to the manual's procedure. This will take effect only for the specific fob, so clearly each fob send its own ID number in every command. Thus the problem is software, and it shouldn't cost you too much, unless your dealer is some 100s short

i agree. It just more painful to have back damaged goods. I dont know how it would work with the insurance, but i would try to work towards ordering a new one.
