[Sigh]It does go beyond not having two hands on the wheel. But it isn't worth explaining it to a DCT driver who thinks he "knows how to drive". Use your hand that isn't at 10 or 2 to Google it

Seems that your digressions are causing you to miss the point that it is bad practice to rest your hand on a manual shift lever does go beyond keeping two hands on the wheel and is applicable regardless of whether you "know how to drive" or not.

But in the event that you're curious, i did [incorrectly] assume that you were a DCT driver. You know... the same way that you [incorrectly] assumed that my advice for the OP to not rest his hand on the shift lever was for the purpose of having both hands on the wheel.

Depends. If the hand is simply resting and not pushing on the lever nothing is gonna wear faster. Pushing the lever past the detents that hold the works in place could cause extra wear.

I just love it when those "WHO DO IT" in forums will always defend their position with NO evidence...so we can easily see those who rest their hands on gear lever... can't we....

It is a very bad habit, not only from a safety point of view, but from Gear Sleeve and Fork wear....which is inside your Transmission.

If you ever saw a shift fork worn down paper thin, or blue from overheating against the slider (Sleeve), then watched the owner drive with his hand on the lever, you wouldn't ever ask this question again. Any extra force is extra load. Extra load is extra wear. Its like riding a motorcycle dragging your shoes on the ground and wondering why your soles are worn off.

good to know ... I've tried to avoid doing it so I can react better in an emergency, despite knowing how to drive

I wonder if this is something that effects newer manuals the same as older? regardless, thanks!

Your post is somewhat contradictory in that the first paragraph says it's ok to test your hand on the knob, but your last paragraph says that any extra load results in extra wear.

I came across likely the same thread as you before i figured it wasn't worth the effort trying to educate somebody about something they think they already know everything about.

But in the event that anybody else is curious...

http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/technical-q-sponsored-algar-ferrari/261182-resting-hand-gear-shift.html

...as mentioned earlier, a Google search will generate lots of reading on the topic

Very nice, from where did you buy the knob and shift boot and what price?

is the m performance knob weighted?

I got it from IND during their Labor Day sale so I saved around 60 bucks, give them a shout, I'm sure they'll help you out. Knob is weighted and feels great. After a couple hundred miles of use I have grown to love the knob, the height is better and shifts feel more natural, I can shift much faster than with the stock knob.

Yes that will fit, the stitching on the boot is silverstone, if I had a matching interior I would have gone with that. Ideally, I wanted red stitching to match my interior but it's not available so I went with the tricolor.

It's 3 colors, it is the tri-stitched boot with the three m colors. I bought both pieces from IND.

Is this the dark grey alcantara 9002 or black alcantara 9040?

The m performance knob lets my fat ass put the BIG slurpee cup in the cup holder without bumping it for 2-3 and 4-5 shifts (I usually put it in the right holder, left side for coins so I never had that problem going into 1st) only thing that sucks is the m performance knob doesn't have that shiny clear coat to match the interior trim (the parking brake seems to have the shiny clear coat)

What? You only have the knob and not the shift boot that comes with it? I didn't think they should just the knob.

Initial impressions after driving for 30 mins today, knob feels good and throws are bit shorter but expected it to be more short ( i know its not a short shifter). Wish it was bit heavier and thicker.

One observation -- 4th to 3rd feels little stiff otherwise all the gears are very smooth and crisp... will it break in ?
