Mine was just replaced with another TAKATA airbag. They said that it was a new design.

I find it interesting that owners in states without high heat/humidity are getting their air bags replaced before those in the south. My car has been a Carolina car since new and they haven't said a word to me about a replacement (other than the original notification).

My car is two years older than yours, so that may be a factor.

Just got my "Final Remedy Available" in the mail today and emailed my SA. So I guess I'll be making an appointment soon as well. Not looking forward to being caught up in their system even for something as small as this, because nothing is quick and easy at the dealer. Could be worse... could have my face destroyed by flying airbag shrapnel. lol

Recall letter received from BMW today... parts are available, take your car to a dealer for repair, bla bla bla. I live less than a mile from the Gulf, it is hot and humid as hell where I am. Surprised it took them this long.....

Got my letter in the mail today.

They claim the repair will "take approximately one hour."

Uh huh.

Curious is there a required dealer or can you go to one that you select?

Got my notice today, called and will be taking it in tomorrow. They told me 1.5 hours but I'm dropping it off and leaving it so who knows.

FWIW, mine took just over an hour (I waited). I don't know exactly what's being replaced, but I have a feeling it's pretty easy to access, and then it's just plug and play.

Total time for me was 55 minutes from drop off to driving home.

My dealership's 45 minutes from home, it sounds like it might be worth me bringing a book and hanging around. It'd be faster than going to home or work for the day and doing another round trip later. Thanks for the info on the timing.

2011 owner, Minnesota, haven't heard a peep since the original notice.

I took mine in today, and it took just over an hour. Funny that my mirrors and seat settings were all screwed up, but other than that I had a nice time ogling all the cars. Some guy was hooning around the lot in a Hellcat. That thing sounds awesome!

Coolest thing was: I pulled into the first service area (where the SAs sit) and got out of the car. Walked over to my SA and he handed me a Vehicle Information printout that had a picture of my car, a close up of the license plate, my VIN number and pictures of all four tires that shows the tread depth (measured by a laser) and estimated stopping distance in wet weather. All in the 20 secondes or so that it took to get out of my car. It's a new building that they just moved into a few months ago, and this was my first service visit.

Cheers!
Craig

Nice... seems like so far they're doing these airbags quicker than I expected. Guess they've had a lot of practice. lol

Coincidence because my dealer and service dept have been constructing a new building across the street, which opened a few months ago as well. I was there for service recently after it had opened and we don't have any of that cool, new-fangled stuff.

No evidence of the high-tech stuff at my local dealership either (the SA seemed to be drowning in paper and phone cords), but they do have fresh pastries, hot and cold beverages, and a nice outdoor patio as part of the expansive waiting area.

Finally received my final remedy notice in the mail as well!

For those wondering, the actual fix should only take a few minutes. If working on previous gen BMW's are any indication, it should be as simple as - unplug battery, undo 4 torx bolts at the rear of the steering wheel, remove airbag. Reverse to reinstall.

EDIT: Called to book my appointment and the girl scheduling appointments said a new BMW policy allows them to only offer loaners to vehicles 2012 and newer, what a joke! Waiting for the Service Adviser to call me back. Yet another reason to not buy a new BMW in the future.

Had mine done today. I got a new 330i. I was never told of this "new" loaner policy.
