Or are you proposing a change in the law despite your own reservations as stated earlier?

If it snows then I'll just take my hot air balloon - there certainly seems to be enough hot air getting spouted in here to keep it afloat
* Nah, I'll stick with my e90 with winter tyres, this'll be my 4th winter of RWD with winter tyres and I'm very much in the 'makes sense' camp. Makes sense to me for the following reasons: a) safety: brake and grip much better in COLD conditions (not just snow) b) financial: an extra set of tyres makes no odds as the car needs tyres of some sort, so they might as well be the 'best' for the conditions c) save the summers: why waste good summer rubber when you can't enjoy the car to it's full potential? d) RWD+winters > 4WD/summers > FWD/summers: winter tyres make RWD a better option than FWD or 4WD on summer rubber. I'm well and truely a RWD fan and don't want to resort back to FWD if I can help it. e) Scotland/living at altitude: proper winter season unlike some of you southern poofters f) 'cos I can

All I have said is, imho...... Anyone who causes congestion or even worse and accident because they are driving in snow on summer tyres should be fined. This would get people thinking about how safe their car is, and may stop people thinking 'I will be OK, I will just take it easy.' who then go on and cause the country to grind to a halt or slide into others. There is no law here, but I think there should be. |

You've overdosed on the vitamin D tablets, try a sun lamp, it should help you regain some intelligence

I will spell it out for you, try and keep up. I don't think it should be made law for winter tyres in the UK. However, I do believe that if you drive on snow with summer tyres you should be fined if you cause a delay or worse still an accident. In Europe many parts insist on winter tyres from around December through to March, by law. I think this is overkill for the UK, it doesn't however mean that people should not be responsible for their actions when taking a car out in snow, they should have to take all necessary precautions to keep the roads clear and be safe. There is a big difference between the two. In many other European countries this is how it works, and because of this many choose to put winters on. They do not want to be made to look irresponsible, it is frowned upon, in the same was drink driving is now frowned upon, which took years to happen over here, and still isn't by many. |

You can't fine someone if there is not a law that enables the fine to be imposed. The UK does not have a 'Gizze's' law as yet, but please feel to start lobbying for one. Is it the red or white that's causing the problem?

I said at the start, 'I think we should...' not 'this is the law...' We can express opinions, it is a forum, and that is what we do. |

So, you don't have to fit winter tyres but if you have an accident it could be deemed negligence on your part. Hope this helps. Every year this thread gets out of hand due to dogma, fanatacism, ignorance, lack of facts and a steadfast refusal to obtain any. This is obviously excellent and it would be a shame if it got out of hand due to a misunderstanding. |
