HA! Did you know your trunk light comes on with your brake lights?

Just noticed this the other night. I had the rear seat/trunk pass through arm rest thing down. A passenger happened to notice my trunk light was coming on and off and asked me why. I had no idea until I stepped on the brake, and the light came on. Then went out. Kind of strange to say the least why BMW would wire it in that way....

The brake light is controlled by the FRM (Footwell Module) while the trunk light is controlled by the FZD (Roof Function Center).

The lights are wired into their respected module and there is no cross connection to the brakes.

Either there is a problem with your wiring, or with your FZD module.

You may want to get it checked out.

interesting...The wiring is completely stock and untouched. Has anyone ever checked to see if their E90/92 does this? I did notice the other night after about 10 minutes of driving, it stopped doing it.

Maybe if you put someone in your trunk and drive away, it acts like a courtesy light for them?

highly doubt that is how they programmed it. sounds like a fault/glitch with your wiring from the factory.

I think I would have noticed it in my wagon over the past 6 years.

I don't think a wagon would qualify as having a trunk.

Are your trunk panels removed? The tail lights aren't very well sealed on the inside and theres a ton of light leakage. If your side panels are removed then you would see the light from your tail/brake lights.

The light on the top of the trunk (under side of rear shelf) is not wired with the brakes. I have driven around with my seats folded down many times and it does not come on.

Was your passenger in the trunk and if yes, then you probably used not enough tape to cover his mouth?

No, the trunk light does NOT come ON with the brakes

Had my back seats down many times and would have been able to see it if it came ON & it has never happened

Find someone that's willing to climb into your trunk and take some short trips around the block to confirm.

Both the wagon and sedan are described by BMW as having "Cargo Bays" which have their own automatically controlled lights.
