ok, you were going over the crest of the hill when the boogie man appeared infront of you.
You then slammed the brakes and locked the wheels and hit the boogie man. Afterwards, it ran away.

If the boogie man was there I can safely say the 540i missed him!

Some 16yr old was practicing his Tokyo drift skillz. Unfortunately his 98 vtec got the best of him. Causing him to drift into your rear bumper nailing your driver rear tire as well. At this point he passed on his awesome drift skillz to you making you flip off a hill and into some rubble where 30 lbs of dirt entered the car at the time. All this while you where at the house and had lent the car to your mother...... Well this is the word on the street…

You didn't put the parking brake on and it rolled out of your driveway down your lawn and rolled off that bank.

If so, I suggest you not admit it.

Wrong answer, so I don't have to lie about it. But ironically my son's best friend did exactly that at the EXACT spot of the last picture. No big loss as it was a Toyota with 250K+ miles on it. The engine mounts broke leaving the engine on the pavement. We all agreed it drove almost as well as it did before the engine dropped! True story!

Good idea!

Another hint: it involves oversteer. The blue and yellow flags were there before the accident, but there are other subtle clues in this pic

Someone came up the drive way too fast. You swirved to avoid him instead you went off the hill sideway, flipped and hit the mail post.

well the dukes of hazard comes to mind...

Did you try to jump the car off the hill and then see a group of your friends getting their picture taken while standing around staring off into space so you swerved at the last second, hitting the mail box causing the car to roll at which time the camera man snapped a pic right as the car landed back on all fours?

The Answer in Words and Pictures

1st Pic: My son was driving the car. He summonsed the 4.4L V8 to impart some kinetic energy, which it dutifully obliged. Just before cresting the hill behind the firetruck the rear swung out into the gravel. He corrected this, but by the time he hit the crest he was solidly in the opposing lane. For a split second he had control, albeit in the wrong lane. Panicking, he pulled hard to the right to get back into lane (a foolish mistake since there was neither traffic nor any other need to get back into lane quickly) but over-corrected. This sent him flying towards the ditch; he locked up the brakes but hit the ditch anyway

2nd Pic: As you can see in this pic the ditch abruptly ends. What is harder to see is that the end of the ditch is another 1.5' deeper - there's a drainage grate at the bottom that channels ditch water to the other side of the road. When the 540i arrives at the end of the ditch the front end is significantly lower than the back, specially the passenger side... and the rear end launches over the front, doing and end-over-end 180....

3rd Pic: Shows the area where the 540i landed sunny side up. Amazingly only one C pillar partially deforms, but the rear window, now traveliing forward breaks out and the roof scrapes up a nice patch of terra firma, depositing it in the cabin. The 540i continues its flip, doing another end-over-end 180 OVER the mail box post. Somehow the mailbox is ripped off (wheel?), but the post itself shows no physical signs of having been touched. Car was at least 4' in the air at this moment in time:

4th & 5th Pic: These pictures show the final landing spot after having done a complete end-over-end 360. It appears that the car literally fell out of the sky, landing solidly on all four wheels. Two of the rims are flattened. Several links in the suspension are snapped, but both the rear and front subframes remained intact. The only piece of trim that came lose in the interior was the C pillar trim piece, clearly seen here. All the other stuff seen in the cabin at the beginning of the thread was exterior stuff thrown into the cabin during wreckage cleanup:

6th Pic: Going back to an initial picture, note that the trailing edge of the spoiler (which for a moment was the LEADING edge!) has paint scraped off. This occurs during the early stages of the second 180. Remarkably the car roof bounces off the ground like it's made out of flubber so much so that the spoiler just barely drags on the ground for a split second:

If you've ever been in a serious accident you know that you can recall every nanosecond of an accident in vivid detail, and my son was no different. His description of the accident at the time was spot-on, matching the accident scene evidence perfectly. What is unusual however, is that he said he NEVER felt his body pressed against the seatbelt and his head NEVER even slightly touched the headliner (he's a big kid, 6"5"). After the accident he literally opened the door and walked away like he had been in some kind of cocoon. He walked around talking to all the bystanders. Everyone was in awe and disbelief to say the least. His only injury was a very small scrap on a pinky finger, probably the result of pushing on some broken safety glass as he exited the car. The EMS crew insisted that he MUST be hurt, so they gave him the entire trauma treatment, stretcher and all. He did not get even a small bruise (supporting his claim that he never pressed against the seatbelt), nor did he ever have ANY soreness in the susbsequent days. As mentioned earlier the airbag never fired - if it had he would have ironically sustained a lot more trauma than had did. Rather remarkable. In my mind it is hard to believe by looking at the pictures that the 540 did a 360 - IMHO it is in incredibly good shape for such an incident. The car hit the end of the ditch hard enough to catapult it yet the front crumple zone did not crumple. The car literally bounced off the roof yet the pillars are in nearly perfect shape. All four doors, trunk, and hood open and close normally, although you do have to fight the hood to get it open.

ah man, that sucks. At least you learned your lesson of knowing better than giving your son a powerful V8 bimmer to play with. And I can see your M3 in one of the pics, nice car.

i have very similar story.

i wrecked my '00 323i on a long sweeping decreasing radius off-ramp going ~70 mph (in a 25 mph zone). i have exited this turn numerous times going upwards of 75 mph, but for some reason, my tail got loose this time. it swung out wide, i counter-steered and 4 wheel drifted momentarily. then all of a sudden the tail snaps in the opposite direction and now i am ass backwards going over 60 mph when i hit the curb which promptly flipped my car over 3.5 times (i remember counting the 7 times i heard it crunch) and it ended up belly up screaching to a halt for 150 ft or so.

as you said, i remember distinctly every fraction of a second during this entire ordeal.

anyway, my car was completely dented in from all sides. the roof caved in a bit but you can see the rails that make up the cage remain entact. only the center portion of the roof dented in a bit but the rails above the side windows supported the car while upside down. all the wheels were bent inwards. mirrors were knocked off. side airbag and head protection (sausage) airbag goes off. all the windows were shattered except the front windshield.

fortunately, none of the 3 in my car was seriously injured. we crawled out the rear windshield since the deformed doors wont open.

coincidentally, my injuries consists of a small gash on my left pinky finger. probably got cut by some broken glass. no big deal. the only other injury is a small bruise on my left thigh in the shape of my cell phone (which was now in several pieces. im guessing the impact from the side airbag deployment must have crushed my cell phone in my pocket. also like you said, even though my car flipped end over end 3.5 times, my head never touched the headliner. the only contact i made with the car was the aforementioned pinky finger and thigh. i wasnt wearing a seatbelt either.

the passenger who was riding shotgun was the most seriously injuried (ironically, she was the only one wearing a seatbelt). she received some gashes on the top of her head probably from the shattered moonroof. considering the severity of the accident, it didnt seem too bad. maybe like 12 stitches... not sure. other than that, she had no other injuries.

the passenger in the backseat, had some bruises from being tossed around in the backseat. nothing major.

all and all, we are all pretty lucky that we werent seriously injured and it just goes to show how rigid these bmws are. i will try to post pics of my totalled 323i when i get home. the pics are on another computer. the pics looks similar to yours, minus the dirt.

before someone else says it, yes, i am an idiot for driving like that. and yes, i am lucky that the 3 of us walked out of that with minor injuries. and no, i no longer drive like that in my old age.

finally, on a funny side note, when the 3 of us went to the nearest ER to get checked up, i was the last to be seen. when i get into the examination room, the doc immediately apologizes for being late. then he asks me, "what happened?" i told him i got into a car accident. he asked, "where was i hurt?" i told him my pinky and thigh. he examined and told me that it was nothing serious and put a bandaid on my pinky and sent me on my way. as i was leaving, he asked about the accident. so i told him i flipped my car. in disbelief, he says "no way! and thats all???", pointing to my pinky and thigh. i said, "yeah i really flipped my car."

then he asks, "wait, was it that black bmw on exit 20??? jesus, that was you??? you know, had it been a lesser car, the roof would have caved in completely and you all would have been crushed!!! no way you would have survived that in a honda!!!"

i smiled (knowing how lucky we are) and started to walk away.

finally he says, "you know, i was late because of that wreck"

Thank the lord your son was ok. I could only imagine how thankful you were that he was not hurt when you pulled up and saw the accident.
